Our tip for working on Vespa and Lambretta engines

Working closely when building a new engine is essential for a good result.
Inlet angle in rotary valve or piston-controlled engines, as well as the overcurrent and outlet angle of the cylinder are important key data that must be taken into account when creating an engine.

Nowadays it is not uncommon, depending on the selection of the components, that the cylinder and / or the motor housing have to be reworked in order to achieve the desired control angles in the inlet area and in the cylinder. This cannot be achieved in some cases simply by measuring with the vernier caliper. It is therefore advisable to put the motor together once “dry” in order to determine the required dimensions. However, if, in case of doubt, the motor housing needs to be reworked afterwards, then ball bearings that have already been inserted would have to be removed again. In almost all cases, this in turn amounts to a premature death of the sensitive camps.

Vespa silent block

Hand on heart - do you ever have that on your Vespa Replaced silent blocks? Unfortunately, this is usually neglected even with complete restorations.

After many, faithfully completed kilometers, it sometimes happens that when you look at the most beautiful rear part in the world you notice that something is wrong here.

If the rear wheel is tilted slightly to the side when viewed from the rear in the direction of travel, then you have vibration, also called silent blocks, put their prime behind them in the motor housing.

Why silent rubbers?

The silent rubbers do not have an easy task: they are supposed to be uncomfortable vibrations Eliminate the drive train swing arm and at the same time for a predictable and safe leadership of the rear wheel. Because the silent rubber on the right-hand side also has to carry a large part of the mass of the engine, this side is subject to greater stress and is therefore also subject to greater wear.

Beware of the "OEM quality"

In the meantime, let's call them “other” suppliers have apparently found their way into the Piaggo bag.
The original silent rubbers are sometimes so soft that the engine is tilted back in the frame due to its own weight. This condition does not improve under a load, i.e. with the driver. Due to worn or too soft silent blocks, brisk Vesps sometimes also tend to oscillate significantly in the longitudinal axis even at higher speeds.

Why install a short 4th gear in the Vespa?

EASY INSTALLATION

The exhaust is mounted like the original exhaust. The elbow is attached to the cylinder using a clamp. Compared to loose fastening with an O-ring seal, this results in the best stability and prevents damage to the outlet flange. The elbow has spring tabs. To ensure optimum ground clearance, a spacer that is too short should not be used on the rear shock absorber.

The idea for this swing arm originally came about when we were setting up our shop demonstrator. Especially for that 50PS strong twin a sensible reinforcement had to be attached to the motor housing.

Instructions for use

So that the swing arm can also find a way to your engine to protect the very rare, large Piaggio two-stroke engines; As with the previous version, a few things must be observed:

  • fits Piaggio 125-180 engines with disc brakes
  • Exhaust bracket on the engine housing needs to be machined

Easy construction

First the motor housing has to be adjusted. The easiest way to do this is to create a gap with a screw that is turned through the holder from behind of 5mm “Adjust”.

To be on the safe side, you should try the swingarm assemble and measure, if these parallel to the surface runs on the Vario lid. Shortening around at least 5mm is usually always required. However, the dimension can also vary depending on the composition of the components and up to 10mm be.

Fasten the rear wheel

The longer connecting rod offers a better deflection angle and thus relief for the lower connecting rod bearing. The longer connecting rod is balanced with a 3 mm foot spacer.
