7 On the Road - Vespa bgm Platónika project by Scooter Center

As we would say in Colombia: “I'm in my salsa * " (it means that I am fully in my element).  I received Platónika with 18 km and exactly 15 days later, she had a thousand km more.

Completely excited because spring is already there colors I started to drive. And even put together a Motonostra accessory set for touring:

But with this German weather you never know! And sure enough, a week later it starts snowing ... that shouldn't stop me, so I'll protect myself from the harsh cold and keep going.

Pictures and videos come and go, but I still think I'm missing something. The reason I fell in love with this scene: Indeed, their Vespisti.

No meetings in sight, "then I'll go with my colleagues" I thought, but who could go with me? in the marketing office where i'm sitting i only have the two of them Lambretistas found…

I'm so excited I can't wait when the end result is a “small” step away ... a bureaucratic step.

Although I have had a Colombian driver's license for more than 10 years, a theoretical and practical test is required in Germany, so: As soon as the project started, I started learning all 800 questions. After I passed it, I also took the practical test. And the Platónika got its approval from the TüV. Both she and I did an excellent job of the paperwork.

The Platónika have registered to replace their old, rusty PX frame, along with their performance improvements, but the license plate was still missing. And the day before my exam, it looked like this:

So my hope for a ride was gone.

However, Alex and the work team surprised me, they had taken care of the details to pick me up on the day of the exam.

Platónika's construction took almost a year. Every single step has been filmed, the pandemic and so on and so on has prolonged the process, but the long-awaited day has finally come.

TIRE

RIMS
The solid aluminum rim from BGM PRO made by FA.Italia saves around 600 grams compared to an original PX steel rim. In addition, there is a weight saving of around 370 grams due to the hose that is no longer required. The unsprung mass is thus reduced by almost one kilogram per axle. The responsiveness of the chassis improves noticeably.

SAFETY
With a double so-called "hump" in the rim bed, the tire is always safely guided in the rim. Similar to the latest runflat technology in the automotive sector, the air can slowly escape if a foreign object (nail or similar) is inserted without the tire slipping into the rim well. A highlight of the electrical system is definitely the powerful one LED headlights from Moto Nostra. Compared to the conventional BA20d bulb with 35 watts, it impresses with its three times higher luminosity (1300 lumens instead of 400 lumens) with a consumption of only 20 watts.

 

It took some time to breathe life into the electrics, which have been converted to direct current. Seven months to be precise, during which Mr. Stroh and I - his faithful assistant - used our rather limited free time to get everything sorted.

The BGM177 is designed in such a way that the cylinder also works perfectly on the original overflow channels.
In our project, however, we use the opportunity to adapt the housing directly. Better filling of the cylinder always means one higher possible torque.

The easiest way to transfer the contour of the overcurrent ducts to the motor housing is to place the appropriate cylinder base seal on the housing and thus transfer the contour to the housing.

My way to the last Trainee-Phase gave me an in-depth look at the Technology department brought. I swapped my notebook for work gloves and instead of taking notes, I now make videos of what I have learned.

And as fate would have it, my dream of restoring a Vespa turned into a reality. We have the idea assembling a Vespa completely from scratch. We are so excited about the project that we decided to film the story of the construction with unboxing, reviews and tutorials.

ASSEMBLY BGM 177 VESPA CYLINDER

All components must be cleaned thoroughly before installation. By selecting the cylinder seals, a squeeze dimension must be established in the specified area. The use of the cylinder head gasket is not absolutely necessary. The recommendation for the basic setting is a squeeze dimension of 1,0 mm. Observe the tightening torque on the cylinder head and tighten the nuts crosswise step by step.

MONTAJE DEL CILINDRO BGM 177 VESPA

Antes de montar el cilindro es imprescindible limpiar meticulosamente todas sus partes. El squish recomendado se consigue mediante una junta de cilindro apropiada. No es obligatorio montar una junta culata. Para empezar recomendamos un squish de 1,0 mm. Por favor, tener en cuenta el par de apriete en la culata y apretar las tuercas al aplicar la norma de apriete en cruz.

RODAJE DEL CILINDRO BGM 177 VESPA

Después de haber montado profesionalmente el cilindro, se recomienda hacerle un buen rodaje durante 60 minutes, con cambios de carga hasta maximum 5000min-¹. Luego el cilindro puede desarrollar toda su potencia.

MEZCLA COMBUSTIBLE ACEITE

En el caso de haber montado un escape normal (es decir que no sea un escape de cámara de expansion) y un carburador de 24mm, recomendamos una mezcla del 2%, used aceite sintético de alta calidad, valley como BGM4000. MOUNTING THE CYLINDER BGM 177 VESPA

Avant de monter le cylindre il est absolument indispensable de nettoyer soigneusement toutes ses pièces. Vous allez obtenir le squish préconisé à l'aide d'un joint de cylindre approprié. Le montage d'un joint de culasse n'est pas obligatoire. Pour commencer, nous vous recommandons and a squish of 1,0 mm. MONTAGGIO CILINDRO BGM 177 VESPA

Prima di montare il cilindro è necessario pulire tutti i componenti. Per ottenere lo squish consigliato è necessario utilizzare le giuste guarnizioni per cilindro. In this post we have already introduced you to the new cylinder. Today we give you a little insight into the development of the cylinder. From the beginning of April 2016 the cylinder finally available!

Developing a two-stroke cylinder is very exciting.
Countless parameters that have to be taken into account, thousands of test bench runs, repeatedly measured, calculated, tested, thousands of kilometers of road tests ...

Everything to get a cylinder as a finished end product that high-torque and willing to perform is, but also at the same time durable is and uses little fuel.
At the same time, it should offer the broadest possible range of applications for touring riders who simply combine it with series components, as well as for the sporty, ambitious tuner who is more concerned with performance.

Here is a little insight into the test series that were on the daily program for the BGM177.

OVERCURRENT DESIGN

We have tested a wide variety of solutions for the external shape and design of the overcurrent channels.
We created various duct geometries, control angles and cylinder combustion chambers and compared them both on the road and on the test bench.

TEST MOTORS SPRINT150

For some of the tests, in addition to an original Piaggio Sprint, we also used an LML engine housing with original inlet membrane control as a starting point.
The Sprint's motor housing is representative of the very small, original rotary valve inlet of the Largeframe Engines. The rotary valve inlet of a PX125 is only slightly larger than the inlet of the Sprint engines and the control angles of the crankshafts are almost identical. In terms of the expected output, this is the “most unattractive” starting position. Nevertheless, we wanted to know what performance can be expected with these basic requirements or, better yet, which performance can be achieved.

We presented the result on a Sprint engine with the 24mm SI carburetor of the PX200 in comparison to a 12HP 200 engine.

So that you can interpret the graph below a little better, just imagine a normal PX200. Up to approx. 90km / h something like acceleration can still be felt on a standard 200. This speed corresponds to about 5500min? ¹ of the motor. From this speed, the torque of a 200 engine drops so far that it takes some time to reach 100km / h (6000min? ¹). If you now compare these speed points of the blue curve with those of the red curve on the graph, you can see that the BGM177 is still increasing torque in this area. In other words, when the 200 slowly runs out of air, the BGM177 accelerates even further.

TEST MOTOR LML150 MEMBRANE

Since the 125cc engine of the Vespa Sprint with the small rotary valve is too restrictive on the power delivery from a certain power and speed level onwards, we used an LML engine housing for various tests and comparisons. The LML motor housing offers the best prerequisites due to the diaphragm inlet that is already present at the factory and the large overflow channels in the housing. As a result, for example, an inlet that is too small or differently designed overflow channels can have no or only an insignificant influence on tests within a test series.

So on the LML housing you can easily switch between an SI carburetor and a large, adult intake manifold.

We performed the tests in this area with a pre-series cylinder with small duct cutouts in the cylinder base
and started with a piston specially made for this test.

The aim of the game was to find out how much space the piston must allow for the overflow duct due to its design in order to ensure good filling. The piston was manufactured in such a way that the clearance around the piston pin in the area of ​​the ÜS channels could be continuously modified by milling.
We tested each of these intermediate steps on our test bench to find out which shape or which combination works best.

TEST OVERCURRENT CROSS SECTION, CYLINDER BASE

The test series below was run on an LML membrane motor with a 24 SI carburetor, BigBox Touring and pistons and ducts that have just been processed in different ways.
At this point in time, the cylinder head was still relatively highly compressed. With the cylinder head in series production, we have reduced the compression somewhat in favor of a broader performance curve.

In its original state, the test piston had the contour of an original PX piston. The piston skirt was closed on the red curve (similar to Piaggio, Polini, Grand Sport, ...)
In the blue curve, the piston has been exposed by a few millimeters in the area around the piston pin. The picture above shows such a piston.
The green curve shows the power curve with partially open overflow channels at the cylinder base and the machined piston. The released area of ​​the channels in the cylinder base corresponds to approx. 80% of the possible channel area that the cylinder can offer.

The BGM177 can therefore be equipped with a gearbox from the 200 series engines without any problems and offers significantly better performance than the large 200 series engine.
The PX125 and PX150 motors were equipped with a gearbox from around 1982 that is almost identical to that of the PX200. With these engines, the primary drive can be extended directly in order to convert the gained power into speed.
The use of a primary gear with 64 teeth would be recommended here. Depending on the desired area of ​​application, the overall reduction can then be adjusted accordingly with the coupling pinion. The primary gear with 64 teeth offers the advantage that the bgm clutch pinions with 22, 23 and 24 teeth can be used.
This offers the possibility of changing the engine from “sporty short for the city (22/64)” to “Autobahn - everything that works (24/64)”.
