TomTom VIO navigation for Vespa & Co

TomRom VIO is the new scooter sat nav for Europe. We tested it on our journey to the Run & Race in Pomposa, Italy.

VIO is for us scooterists the perfect combination of style and functionality. You need a smartphone with IOS or Android operating system. Information about navigation is sent from the GPS of you smartphone and displayed on the VIO screen via Bluetooth. VIO is provided with a touchscreen to select your recent destinations or favorites, this way you don't need any GPS chip. As a result, TomTom VIO is much cheaper than the usual sat navs, nevertheless the peculiarity of this item is its high quality and service: thanks to the free TomTom VIO app you can receive for the life of your product updated maps of all Europe, see below.

Starting your TomTom VIO

Install the app and download your maps

As a first step, you need to download the free app from Appstore and then connect your smartphone to VIO using Bluetooth. It worked immediately and it was very easy to use. We could download several maps of Italy but we selected Northeast Italy for our journey, about 150MB but the download was very quick even though we had a mobile Internet connection.

Fix your VIO to your mirror bar

Now you can fix the mount to your scooter. VIO is fixed safely and can be removed by a simple rotating movement. Please note: no anti-theft protection.

Fixing the mountainit is easy and quick. You can fix VIO directly to the mirror bar or, using an adapter, to the handlebar or handlebar grip. Fixing material and hexagonal key are also provided with VIO. If you want to mount VIO on other vehicles then you need to use further mounts. VIO can be fixed only to tube handlebars, bikes and to the left handlebar grip of automatic scooters. In this video you can see how to fix VIO to the handlebar/grip:

How VIO works

Display - easy to read

We used VIO mainly on a vintage Lambretta 1st series, whatever the weather, time and on Italian roads, in the countryside, through cities and on motorways. Also in the rain, in the dark or on damaged roads VIO worked perfectly and never let us down.

Voice instructions

VIO provides precise information very quickly. However, we couldn't hear the voice instructions while driving on the motorway: no wonder if you drive a tuned Lambretta at a speed of 110-120 km / h. In such cases you can use a headset connected to your smartphone.

When driving Vespa Primavera ET3 with Polini engine in the city we could hear the voice instructions clearly.

Sometimes it was sufficient to take a look at the display.

Battery capacity

The battery of our VIO could run during the whole 250 km tour from Lake Garda to Pomposa, on the Adriatic coast. According to the information provided by the manufacturer, the battery should have 5 hours run-time, but it can also run up to 7 hours. The battery charges using an USB cable supplied with your VIO and can be charged using a USB charger.
