Vespa V98 / 3

Model: Vespa 98/3
Year of construction: 1947
Frame abbreviation: V98

Description:

The Vespa 98 was the first mass-produced Vespa from Piaggio. It was built between 1946 and 1947 and divided into four series: V.98 / 1 and V.98 / 2 and from 1947 V.98 / 3 and V.98 / 4, the modifications being insignificant. The basis for the first model were the prototypes Paperino (or MP5) and MP6 by Corradino D'Ascanio and Enrico Piaggio. An essential feature was the free access, which is maintained to this day.
The V98 has a 98 cc engine, a three-speed gearbox and a top speed of 3 km / h. The leg shield has the characteristic kink and now has an additional bracket for a speedometer. The fender is now narrower than on the two predecessors. There is no main stand and is leaned on a boom that protrudes left and right from the rear footboard.

From the second series of the Vespa 98 were whole 16.500 models produced. The model of the second series also showed various technical and aesthetic improvements. In addition, it was equipped with a spare wheel, because the risk of a puncture was very high given the catastrophic condition of the roads in the post-war period; this extremely functional element then became a trademark of Vespa over time. As part of the second series, improvements were also made to the vehicle's headlights and the metallic silver is reminiscent of Piaggio's business aircraft. Many magazines spoke of it at the time 8 month waiting lists to purchase a Vespa 98 and for this reason, this Vespa was on the Black market almost twice the price sold for 125.000 lire.
