1949 - Vespa 125 (V14) 1949

VEH1855
Model: Vespa 125 (V14) Year of construction: 1949 Frame abbreviation: V14T Frame number: ?
Description:
The V1T was the first 125cc model to be produced by the Piaggio factories. Compared to the V98, it has been technically revised in essential points. In addition to the cylinder bore being increased from 50 mm to 56,5 mm, the mounting bolts of the shift segment have been doubled (in the Tecnica: "the mounting bolt of the shift cross cover") in order to eliminate the faults that occurred on the V98 were. The carburetor is still a Dell'Orto TA 17, but now with a flap on the air filter as a choke, which is operated via a cable with a lever under the swing saddle. The steering tube is now routed down the right side of the scooter instead of on the left in the direction of travel to the front wheel swing arm, which has a completely new suspension system. Instead of the earlier leaf springs, a coil spring is now installed parallel to the steering tube.
The shift linkage is now routed from the brake pedal up to above the attachment screws of the swing arm within the frame tunnel. The rear wheel now also has suspension consisting of a coil spring and a hydraulic damper.
The bonnet is movably attached with two hinges at the top and is fixed to the frame with a spring fastener at the bottom. The opening in the engine hood, which was still circular on the V98, is now open downwards on the V1T so that the engine can vibrate. The frame opening through which the intake manifold is routed from the carburetor to the cylinder is enlarged to give it more freedom of movement in the now spring-loaded engine. The saddle is now also spring-loaded at the front and a luggage hook is installed below the tip of the saddle.
Finally there is a simple side stand so that you no longer have to lean the Vespa on the running board when parking it. The light switch and taillight are the same on the first models as on the V98, but are then changed: the switch is fan-shaped with a black plastic base and a chrome-plated cover; the rear light no longer has a frame.
The horn gets a new shape and a central adjustment screw on the outside. The front headlight with Siem disc and chrome ring has a diameter of 95 mm and a decorative fin made of chrome-plated Zamak (die-cast zinc). The carburetor flap has a spring and small rubber mounts are attached to the frame, which dampen the vibrations of the flap. The tank is fitted with a reserve fuel tap, which is opened and closed with a hook-shaped (still ring-shaped on the V98) control lever. The tank cap on the first models has a spring and quick-release fastener, which is not installed again until 1955 on the GS. The Piaggio logo is now on the newly designed grips, the aluminum plugs on the handlebar ends remain. In the leg shield emblem, the "Genova" lettering is slightly larger than on the V98.
In the 1949 model year, the cylinder and cylinder head are modified for better cooling. From now on, the cooling fins of the cylinder no longer run perpendicular to the cylinder base, but parallel. This shape is retained in all later models to this day. The piston pin diameter is increased from 12 mm to 15 mm. The flange of the intake manifold is fastened with three stud bolts instead of the previous two.
