Motorsport as marketing

At the end of the 40s, the most famous motorcycle manufacturers took part in various races with their models because they saw this as the best possible advertisement. They wanted to draw the audience's attention to the motorcycle industry in order to attract new potential customers. The Piaggio scooter took part in a number of races as part of this marketing strategy, but not only because of it: the Vespa 125 Circuito proved useful in examining new solutions which then led to adjustments to the standard model. Vespa racing scooters were assembled entirely by hand by the specialists at Piaggio and raced by famous pilots such as Joseph Cau and Dino Mazzoncini. For example, Giuseppe Cau won the Cronometro Catania Etna race in 1950 and won first place in his category (125ccm), while he was third in the overall ranking of pilots after Guzzi and Benelli.
