Clutch and primary drive are crucial and highly strained links between crankshaft and drive. its weakest part are the springs of the jolt damping.

These transmit the entire torque to the rear wheel, guarantee a symmetrical power transmission to the gearbox and smoothen the asymmetric flow of the crank drive between the dead centers. Not only in racing heavy crankshafts, lighter flywheels and immense load alterations shorts the tough life of the original springs.

Comparing our springs to a Piaggio spring, you will see that the BGM spring is more elastic and the spring wire offers a larger deviation.

A larger possible deviation and a higher spring constant protect the primary drive of sharp breaking parts, even in the toughest conditions.

Due to fitting conditions you cannot simply enlarge the spring to enhance its life span. Therefore we paid attention to use good material. Oteva is a highly robust spring steel, which is used for extremely dynamic loads. Its distinguishing characteristic is its durability at high temperatures during extreme mechanical use. Its surface is shot peened to further enhance durability.

Need of a high performance engine concept

Just like any good racing exhaust, the sport box needs a high performance engine concept in order to develop full performance. Surrounded by cylinders like the Quattrini M1X and similar, the sport box offers impressing results. It easily supports engine performances above the 25 HP level and pushes with a rich torque. Despite its high top performance, the sport box also supports leisure cruising.

Due to the commitment to a high gas flow rate, BigBox Sport is not suitable for standard engines or tame tuning cylinders. It needs a clear and strong pressure impulse in order to breathe life into the big manifold of the Sport Box.

  • Also fits a Rally / Sprint without modifications
  • Solid design with clamp screw on the cylinder

CONS:

  • Not suitable for vehicles with 8 inch wheels (no sufficient ground clearance)
  • Not suitable for standard engines

To fasten the manifold at the cylinder you need a clamp screw. Compared to loose fastening with an O-ring sealing these results in best stability and prevents damage to the exhaust flange. For best ground clearance you should use a long spacer at the rear shock absorber.

Conclusion: pure understatement. Performance of a racing exhaust, looks and sound like a standard exhaust.

Vespa Raid Maroc 2014: The hardest Vespa race in the world!

This year was the third time for the Vespa Raid in Morocco. A six-day race over mountains and across the desert. But always winding slopes and slalom through football sized boulders and other obstacles.

For all the rivalry between the teams, the atmosphere of fair play and great helpfulness to each other is practiced. The biggest battle is against the adversities of nature and not against the fellow racers.
Ferran, one of the organizers, made available for Sticky a pink Vespa PX on the road to enable him to expand his broad portfolio of racetracks. The Vespa PX is well prepared for this type of race and has proven itself in three desert racing seasons. Including the 2011 Pan-Africa Rally, which is the inspiration for the Morocco Rally organizer.

 

I used the BGM rim on the front wheel for 5 days and on the rear for the last two days, Initially I worried that the rear tire might spin on the smooth rim and rip the valve out when running at low pressures, but it never did . On day 6 I rode to the checkpoint with a deflating front tire on a BGM rim, but despite hitting some big rocks the rim was still fine when I changed the tube. The lip on the outer edge of the rim is much thicker and stronger than standard. Changing tires and tubes with these stainless split rims is a lot easier than with loose paint and rusty steel or with tubeless wheels. If the BGM rims prove reliable in the long term then you'd expect every tire change to be this easy. " Sticky

 

Despite health problems (which may have had an impact on his top decking passion), he pulls up to 200 km per day on the Vespa.

The navigator holder is replaced by gaffer tape and the original Piaggio Vespa rims are replaced by the bgm PRO stainless steel rims. The right decision! We already took a closer look at the new kit:

The well known Malossi piston comes with this kit as well. But this time it features a one piston ring design only. The single piston ring is at the same place as the top piston ring or the 2 ring version.
Even the length of the piston skirt is the same as on the 57 mm stroke version. So if you fit the kit to the 60 mm crank where it is said to be suited too, you still have to check that the piston skirt doesn't touch the crankcase at the bottom dead center.
The length of the new barrel is 98.3 mm to cope with the extra stroke.

Malossi 221 012

The cylinder head is the one that is supplied with the 57 mm stroke kits as well. The compression ratio is 10.5: 1. It is centralized by bushes at the head and barrel.
We had a quick look at the port heights as well. The transfer ports were not matching in height hence we took the average measurement of both sides: of 47.2 mm.

The discharge width is good With 63% in the green. The moderate chord and the large corner radius make the piston ring

The exhaust width at 63% and the big radius at the corners are very good for the life time of the piston rings.

We had a closer look at the new one Malossi Sport and MHR cylinder kits earlier. Now we check the new Polini 221 cc cylinder kit that is supposed to be used with 60 mm stroke crankshafts.

The cylinder head is the one that is used on the Polini 210cc as well. So let us have a look at the compression ratio of the head that is used with both kits.

Once the long threaded spark is fitted the head is tight enough for it's closer inspection. To have our Plexiglas high tech measurement equioment sealed properly too with put a little bit grease on the head's gasket surface.

With Plexiglas plate attached we fill up the combustion chamber with oil to get the volume of the combustion chamber.

With 25 ml putted into it, we have a 25 cc combustion chamber volume.

To get the complete combustion chamber volume (Vc) we need the volume of the curved piston dome. With a freely selected recess of the piston we can calculate the volume above the piston. We have the piston recessed by 6 mm here.

6.85 x 6.85 x 0.785 x 0.6 = 22.1 cc is the volume of this area.

Sealed with grease and filled up with a light oil we see 14.6 ml (= 14.6 cc). So we have 22.1-14.6 = 7.5 cc for the volume of the piston dome.

To get the show complete we know need to have a look at the squis area volume. This needs to be measured at the engine with the parts like crank, barrel, piston and head mounted. We measure a 2.2mm squish clearance. This gives a volume of 8.1 cc.

So we have a combustion chamber volume of:

Cylinder head 25 cc

+ Squish clearance 8,1cc

-piston dome 7,5cc

= 25,6cc

This gives a compression ratio? of

Cylinder 221 cc + combustion chamber area 25,6 cc / combustion chamber volume 25,6 cc

= 246,6ccm / 25,6ccm

? = 9,63

So slightly higher compression ratio then the Malossi with? = 9,3 (on a 57 mm stroke engine!)

This is the Polini 221 engine of a customer.

Polini 221cc, Crankshaft Polini 60mm stroke, Dellorto PHBH 28, Polini inlet manifold for rotary valve and with our bgm BigBox. With a standard base gasket there are port timings of 120 ° / 170 °. All details are written in the diagram.

This is a plug and play engine with no further porting. And one has to admit that 26 Nm of torque are lots. Especially if they are so low down in the power band.

At 4.000 rpm we have 20 Nm this is double the torque a standard P2 engine has at peak.

Depending on the preferred riding style and for what the scooter should be used too, a taller gear ratio makes sense to not over-rev the engine all the time. The very well balanced and smooth running Polini crankshaft is a perfect companion for traveling as well as street racing ...

This engine setup and a longer gear ratio should give an engine that should sit for long distance travells easily at 120 km / h. Here ** as an example with an original gearbox, compared to our bgm bgm Superstrong clutch with DRT sprocket with one tooth more and the original primary drive of the P2 with 65 teeth.

With 20 hp at 7.000 rpm it should be easy to do the often quoted 120 km / h mark.
