After the orange-metal flake racer of the Scooter Centers Cologne slumbered for half an eternity in the shop's sales and showroom, it has recently been severely disturbed in its deep sleep. In addition to photo shoots for the flyer for the Sprint Race Marl and for the new Lambretta catalog, it was also exhibited at various international custom shows such as Ried and Antwerp as well as at CSR racing events on the Nürburgring.

Arthur Francis?

The Arthur Francis lettering is very often used as a reference to give the baby a name. But the well-known and quite spectacular, almost dramatic story of the scooter has little to do with the name Arthur Francis.

Lambretta Concessionaires UK & Filtrates!

Instead, it is above all the names Lambretta Concessionaires UK and the then very renowned lubricant manufacturer Filtrate, on whose initiative the racer can be traced back.

In September 1965, for example, those responsible at Filtrate asked Ernie Hall whether he could convert a Lambretta for world record attempts. Together with Bob 'Beard' Webb, another tuning great, he got going shortly after this meeting. The duo is provided with a fresh Lambretta GT 200, which is subjected to radical tuning in all areas. In addition to the quite obvious optical changes, there are many radicalizations of details and quite complex engine tuning. This goes far beyond the first-mentioned measures such as increasing the pre-compression by converting to a full-cheek shaft, a whale Phillips fuel injector and a racing exhaust.

The record set by Don Noys on Lambretta in Elvington in October 1965 with 82.08 mph (131,328 km / h) was to be attacked.
After a real show of strength by the tuner duo, a press conference is announced for November 1965, at which the record breaker will be presented.

"England is looking for the super pilot"

In the run-up to the press conference, a competition for which 67 women are applying is running, according to the motto 'England is looking for the super pilot'. Including a grandmother who is convinced that she has the potential to chase sprint records. The selection criteria are enthusiasm and driving experience. The GT 200, transformed into a mini projectile, fits perfectly with the physique of the twelve young women who made it onto the shortlist. With regard to the assessment of whether the mini skirts go just as well with the photo shoot on the Racer, should be very much in the eye of the beholder. The 22-year-old taxi driver from Bristol, Marlene Parker wins the race. Her trademark should soon be the skin-tight, white leather suit.

Snow in Snetterton - chaos in Italy

The first run planned for November in Snetterton was unfortunately canceled due to snowfall, so that the scooter had to survive its baptism of fire in Italy.

Before the 39th Milan Motor Show the Monza racetrack was booked for record drives on December 2, 1965.

Despite the aerodynamically extremely favorable full fairing and despite the extremely low combat weight, Marlene's scooter does not really get going due to carburetor problems. The 'official' timekeeping is also chaotic. From a motorsport point of view, the trip is a disaster. According to Bob Wilkinson from the Lambretta Concessionaires, the test phase, which was far too short without any run away from the workshop and the high time pressure, was to blame. Marlene has her potential not only to delight in white leather, but can still prove it in Monza. With a borrowed scooter, she was able to break the Italian national record with 17.6 seconds for the standing quartermile.

If the trip from Filtrate to Italy was a sporting disaster, it was a real triumphal procession from a PR point of view. Press and camera teams surround the booth at the motor show and are blown away by Ms. Parker. The name Filtrate is known throughout Italy and Marlene is celebrated for her charm, wit and quick-wittedness in addition to her work in leather.

The inflatable elephants with which the Lambro 550 is advertised are no longer fully effective in addition to this hustle and bustle. Filtrates and the Lambretta Con. issue the following press release: "Yesterday (December 3, 1965), Marlene Parker from Bristol drove a Lambretta GT 200 to maximum speed. The quarter mile was covered at a speed of 82,296 km / h.“This achievement was recognized by the Lambretta Club Italy with a bouquet of flowers and a gold medal.

World record ¼ mile envisaged

Back in England, the rest of the winter was used to get the engine going and to further reduce the weight. In the spring of 1966 Marlene was offered a contract to attack the world record on the standing ¼ mile, the complete mile and over a kilometer in the class up to 250 cc. Unfortunately, the appointment in April does not come and the team around Ms. Parker is quiet.

On May 13, 1966, Garnett Keeler, the press officer of the Lambretta Trojan Group, issued a statement that the now "JET" racer would break the world records with a potential top speed of 125 mph.

In 1967 the scooter lost track. Several years later it appears in the Mike Karlslake collection in its current paintwork and with a few documents. After Mike's death and the subsequent auction of this unique Lambretta collection, Marlene's Roller found its way to Germany and finally to Scooter Center to Cologne (Bergheim).

One of the most common questions the monkey is asked is: "Why do you use plastic for your products?"

“Well, the answer is not that simple, but first things first: The monkey does not rely on cheap plastic, but on high-quality polyamide (PA12).

Polyamide is a construction material that is ideally suited for the production of series parts due to its diverse properties. In addition, some of our parts are made with classic manufacturing methodsmethods would not be representable at all. Certain undercuts and interlocking elements were extremely difficult or impossible to implement with most manufacturing methods (e.g. machining, injection molding). In addition, we use state-of-the-art processes for the creation, which enable the shortest possible production times at low costs. Another aspect is the conservation of resources that goes hand in hand with these processes. Less energy consumption and less material waste also means less and less damage to the environment.

Of course, we only use PA where the material allows it and it makes sense for the end product. We are currently converting our production process to a relatively new and better method so that we can achieve even better results with our plastic parts. A higher density (1,01 g / ccm), sufficient temperature resistance and good resistance to the most common chemicals in the intended area of ​​application were decisive factors for this decision. "

The cylinders offer significantly increased performance and thus more suitability for everyday use and driving fun.
The power is available relatively early in the rev range and the kits have enough torque to drive longer gear ratios. The power delivery is very even, so that RaceTour engines feel like an original Innocenti 200 engine but with twice the power.

PERFORMANCE
The ready-to-install clutch is designed for a power range up to approx. 8010PS / 20Nm by means of the mounted soft clutch springs (BGM25W). Reinforced springs, which are available separately, extend the performance range of the clutch to over 40 hp. The following spring types are available:

VEHICLES
The bgm Pro Superstrong replaces the conventional coupling type used in the entire Lambretta LI vehicle family. Thus suitable for Lambretta LI, LI S, SX. TV (series 2-3), DL / GP models.

The clutch pressure plate and spider can also be used with all other five- and six-plate clutch pinions. As long as the pinions are within the Innocenti tolerances, this fits without reworking the parts. With such combinations, the protrusion of the coupling spider in particular should be checked.

TIP:
 Also order the shim for spacing the coupling. This is installed under the clutch pinion and is available in thicknesses of 0,8-1,6 mm. The protrusion of the BGM hub (coupling spider) to the BGM pinion is in the tolerance range of 0,10mm to 0,12mm. A sufficiently large distance is set using thrust washers of various thicknesses. If the distance is too small, the clutch does not run freely.

Vespa rectifier bgm PRO: With the new bgm PRO horn rectifier for Vespa 12V, we finally offer you a replacement for the Piaggio horn rectifier for Vespa PX and Vespa PK, which has not been available for a long time.

Areas of application of the horn rectifier

The rectifier works in any 12V AC environment and is not limited to Vespa and / or PX / PK. The rectifier is NOT referenced to ground. This means that the current (via the switch) can be conducted to the horn - and the mass of the horn can be placed directly on the scooter frame.

Really load-independent LED flasher relays are difficult to find. The integrated relay also works with LEDs that consume well below 1W power.

Charge your mobile phone or GPS to your Vespa

Charge your mobile phone or GPS on the go - without the annoying battery. Simply the loading output of the Rectifier to the USB charging socket (12V) and place the ground pole of the charging socket on the frame. Your end device is charged with up to 3A - this is enough for most devices for a charge from zero-> 100% in 60 minutes. (The charging function is switched off while the horn is sounding.)

Small construction - great potential for use

The bgm PRO horn rectifier is significantly smaller than the original Piaggio part or its replicas. It can therefore be easily accommodated in the case of 12V conversion conversions of older scooters. With the 12V conversion, nobody has to do without the original horn in favor of a buzz.

The BGM Pro horn rectifier is a high-quality replacement part for the Piaggio horn rectifier of the Vespa PK, PX, T5 and Cosa models, which is no longer in production. In addition, it has an integrated blink relay for LED blinkers and an output for USB sockets.

Our customer Felix and his new project: Lambretta Barracuda! He's coming to our premiere with this impressive scooter custom show. But let's take a quick look back first:

A previous project by Felix is ​​the Vespa PX “EL-SIDNEY”. This scooter tells a story: it was the first Vespa with a CNC engine.

The Vespa PX EL-SIDEY has been the development vehicle for various developments since May 2006, not least for the one that is available today Vespa CNC motor from GP-ONE and KR-Automation GmbH, as we do in our Vespa Smallframe demonstrator XI GENERATION have installed.

The Lambretta BARRACUDA story

After selling the EL-Sidney in 2014, Felix fell into a deep hole ;-). Well at least he was looking for a new challenge and comforted himself with a Lambretta frame.
Over time, the vision arose to build another vehicle with a CNC motor. With the idea of ​​further developing the ideas from the El-Sidney project and integrating new features. The Lambretta BARRACUDA should surpass the Vespa EL-SIDNEY.
So at the end of 2015, Felix gave a Lambretta motor to Topometric for 3D measurement. The tried and tested cylinder and membrane from the Vespa engine should also be used in the Lambretta. In order to have a theme around the vehicle, an individual design was developed around the Lambretta: BARRACUDA.
Why “BARRACUDA”? Predatory fish, long and slender. Fits 100% on this Lambretta!
Custom is the program here. Most of the parts are custom-made. The design was based on all of these self-made CNC components adopted in order to get not only a paint job, but also many small, finely worked details. This is how a Lambretta is currently being created with unique recognition features from the luggage rack, brake drums, to the step rails, brake pedal and the handles:

The supply of spare parts for the Lambretta is probably better today than it has been for fifty years. The range of parts from various manufacturers is getting bigger and more colorful.

We remember with horror the supply of spare parts at the time we did it Scooter Center Started in 1992. Even if the parts did fit, the gray tones of the rubber parts of a series 3, for example, changed from whitish yellow to anthracite. Supplying series 1 and 2 parts was hard to imagine.

There is an outline of the history of Casa Lambretta, which began in 1979/80. So not that long after the end of production of the dl / GP series. The parallel between Vittorio's experiences with Lambretta in the early days and those of the Lambretta drivers in the early nineties is particularly beautiful. Where a minority had to acquire a thick skin to justify the Lambretta. But we seem to digress ...

Actually, it's about the step rails from Casa Lambretta for the Li family. Let's do it chronologically.

Lambretta TV 175 Series 1

It's very easy for the TV 175 Series 1. For the top model from Innocenti, which was built around 10.000 times between 1957 and 1958, there is the

Lambretta LI series 1

With the Li series 1 there is a distinction between the 125 cc and the 150 cc models. The Li 125 comes with continuous aluminum strips at the front and the gray plastic strips on the running boards:

The Li 150 Series 1 has aluminum strips at the front, into which rubber tread strips are inserted and which are closed off by the tread strip end pieces:

Lambretta LI & TV Series 2

After more than 150.000 series 1 Lambrettas have been built, the series 2 is the successor. The solution for the gradation of the models by - among other things - the step rails is retained. The TV 175 Series 2 gets the same floor strips and end pieces as the Li 150.

With the Series 3 it's very easy. Here, all models get the same set of steps made of plastic in gray, paired with inner aluminum strips with rubber inlay and step rail end pieces as a finishing touch:

In the case of the dl / GP series, in addition to the color - black instead of gray - only the design of the treadboard end pieces and of course the specific lengths at the front for the other leg shield of the dl / GP compared to series 3 changes:

The nice thing about the Casa Lambretta parts is next to that excellent quality the fact that many parts after the original Innocenti drawings are manufactured. The correct mounting material is included in the scope of delivery.

In the case of the plastic step strips for Series 3, the attention to detail can go a little further. They are cast on the original tools by one of the original manufacturers for Innocenti. So they correspond exactly to the original in every aspect. Also with regard to the corrugation on the top. An advantage that should not be underestimated for an accurate restoration.

Little spring check - what do your cables look like?

The birds chirp it from the trees and roofs, the scooters are fetched from the garage and basement: spring is finally here. It's high time you took a look at the Bowden cables and cable sleeves on your scooter.

The cables are relevant to safety! The ropes mostly operate the brakes, clutch and gas on your scooter. Anyone who has ever seen a scooter hanging at full throttle knows what I'm talking about. A broken train can have fatal consequences. I don't even like to imagine a brake that doesn't work. In the best case scenario, if the clutch cable breaks, you simply have to break down and have to change it on site or get help.

But it doesn't even have to get that far: With a simple function and visual check, you can minimize the risk of a broken cable in advance!

Function test: Are the trains stiff?

Unfortunately, you often don't notice that yourself because you have got used to the loss of comfort. In any case, the slightest creaking noises and even a slight hooking movement when actuated are noticeable. Sometimes the lever does not return to its original position or only hesitantly. Does your throttle not go back by itself? These can all be indicators of worn cables.

A visual check of the cables makes it easier and more certain. Most of the trains are hidden in the frame, but usually no problems arise there. Take a close look at the cable housings and inner cables. If your moves look like this, it's high time you changed them.

Cracked and brittle outer shells are a problem!

But the problem is homemade and only a matter of time: the old, originally installed trains are very simple to assemble. They only consist of a thin, outer casing and a narrow metal spiral in which the inner Bowden cable runs. If the outer shell has become brittle over the years, moisture and dirt can easily get into the track of the train. High wear and tear and stiff trains are the result. That means a security risk and definitely a loss of comfort.

Tips:

  1. When assembling the cables and the matching nipples, always make sure that you insert them with a little grease! This makes it easier for the nipple to turn in the lever when it is actuated.
  2. A worn one lever you can recognize it by an oval, enlarged pull nipple seat. And use if possible new clamp nipples.
