A Vespa Sei Giorni?

A real Vespa Sei Giorni  -> Vespa model history is one of the most sought-after collector's items. But what about one Vespa Six Days on yourself?

In 1951 the Vespa factory racing team “Piaggio Squadra Corse” caused a sensation during a race. The “Sei Giorni Internationale” took place from 18.-23. September 1951 in Varese, in the hinterland of Lake Maggiore / Italy. It was one of the toughest and most important competitions of its time, with 220 participants covering several hundred kilometers in rough terrain.

Race 6 giorni (6 days)

Sei Giorni = six days

This six-day reliability race is still known today as the “International Six Days” Enduro ”. The first race was in England in 1913 and demanded everything from the daring driver and the racing machine, especially when you consider that the Vespa has only been around for 5 years.

For this race only, Piaggio modified a small edition of 300 125cc Vespa models. The “Piaggio Squadra Corse” started with 10 of these vehicles. But what should the small Vespas be able to do against cross motorcycles specially built for this competition?

Surprisingly for everyone, the works team from Piaggio (drivers: Biasci, Cau, Crabs, Mazzoncini, Merlo, Nesti, Opesso, Riva, Romano, Vivaldi) won over full-blown off-road motorcycles on the Vespa: 9 of the 10 drivers received a gold medal. The Vespa 125 “Sei Giorni” also won the Italian Motorcycle Association's award for this achievement in 1951, in which three pilots Giuseppe Cau, Miro Riva and Bruno Romano stole the show with the Italian Vespa models.

Close-to-series racing machines

Visually, that was Vespa "Be Giorni" hardly distinguishable from the production model. For example, more tank volume, improved aerodynamics in the leg shield area and a larger engine cover were the main distinguishing features.

Vespa Six Days 2017

As we did in 2016 live from the two-wheeler fair EICMA report, there is from Piaggio, as a reminder of this legendary success, a special model, the Vespa Sei Giorni 300.

Scooter Center Vespa SeiGiorni

Since this Eicma in 2016 there has been an idea for a new one Scooter Center Demonstrator that connects the modern automatic Vespa with the classic Vespa. Just as we do with our product range - ours Vespa shop you get everything for your Vespa - whether it's an old model or a new scooter!

We felt inspired by the new edition to implement our own idea of a “modern” Vespa Sei Giorni. Alex Stroh (right) and Frank Winkel (left) are the people behind our new one Vespa SeiGiorni scooter center.

The creation of the SC SeiGiorni

Our new Vespa demonstrator began life as a normal, slightly damaged Vespa GTV. When it fell onto the street and then into our hands, she probably didn't realize what we were going to do with her.
In the beginning there was construction foam ... Viiieeeellll construction foam! But we got that under control quickly ...

Scooter Center Vespa SC Sei GiorniVespa modeling with construction foam

Filled construction foam?

But if you think now that we have just artfully filled the construction foam ...
Of course, that was only the template for Mathias Laubsch from the sheet metal works in Neuss http://www.blechwerk.com/ who has now masterfully implemented our template in BLECH .

Extensive sheet metal and painting work!

For the characteristic “nose” we built in a repair sheet that is normally used on a Vespa VNA-VNB. “Only” the indicators and the hole under the taillight were welded shut and then the SeiGiorni went to the painter ...

All plastic parts were given a silver base coat so that when you patinated you landed on “sheet metal” and not on disdainful plastic.

Then all sheet metal and plastic parts were first painted in the characteristic deep red primer that was used in the 50s, then a second primer in gray - before finally the red paint was applied, which is based on the racing paintwork of the first Piaggio racing models.

Personal sacrifice for a Vespa bench

The bench frame was "made up" in our workshop and then by the bench doctor Holger http://www.sitzbankdoktor.de/ to hand over. He sacrificed his old leather jacket and made the perfect bench for the SeiGiorni.

A racing wheel is a must!

The handlebar was exchanged for a Fehling M handlebar.

Vespa with race patina

In order to obtain the desired patina, the files and sandpaper were allowed to work!

Daytime LED conversion Vespa GTS with instructions

The newer Vespa GTS models from the year of construction 2014 have an additional daytime running light in the indicator lights. That looks great and offers additional security.

Update for daytime running indicators for Vespa GTS models built before 2014!

THE DESIRE

The Vespa GTS models from 2014 already have an LED daytime running light which is integrated in the indicators. These indicators also fit in all previous years of the GT / GTS / GTL series.

THE PROBLEM

However, the wiring is not very easy due to the different connector types used at the factory and would require irreversible intervention in the wiring harness.

THE SOLUTION

Our specially made adapter cable branch for your Vespa GTS before 2014 allows an absolute simple and comfortable Connection. This is suitable for all years of construction. Just plug it in and enjoy the great LED light:

THE perfect conversion set for your Vespa GTS LED indicators

So that this neat look and the daytime running light function can also be implanted in the GTS models built before 2014, you need our practical one Daytime retrofitting set for Vespa GTS consisting of the original Piaggio indicators and the bgm adapter cable:

Indicator set -PIAGGIO Triom, LED daytime running lights- Vespa GTS (2003-2013) - white - clear glass -

LED daytime running lights set Vespa GTS

You can of course also get the cable individually if you already have the indicators:

PV60CKT Cable adapter kit for indicator conversion -BGM PRO, LED daytime running lights- Vespa GTS

PV60CKT cable adapter kit for indicator conversion -BGM PRO, LED daytime running lights-

PV60CKT cable adapter kit for indicator conversion -BGM PRO, LED daytime running lights- Vespa GTS (2003-2013)

feature

It works very simply: The daytime running lights of the turn signals are supplied by the light. When the ignition is switched on, the daytime running lights are also switched on.

The modification

To assemble the indicators and to lay the cable branch are simply only

  1. the maintenance hatch on the left
  2. the cascade,
  3. of course dismantled the turn signals.
  4. Then reassemble. Finished

The following tool is required

Assembly work

To remove the maintenance flap, turn the handlebars to the right and remove the screw with a TX25 wrench.

You then have to look for something in the bowels of the electrical system through the maintenance hatch. The object of desire is a free harness with a
8-way multi-connector. If the vehicle has an alarm system, it is plugged in there.

On some vehicles, this free cable branch is fixed to the glove compartment with a clip - here's a look through the front turn signal opening.

The Kasakde is only secured with an internal serrated screw (TX) hidden behind the Piaggio emblem.

The emblem has a small gap on the left-hand side in the direction of travel and can be lifted from there with a narrow screwdriver.

The only screw of the cascade is hidden underneath. This is released and removed with a TXS25 key.

The cascade is removed upwards / towards the front.

Dismantle both indicators with a Phillips screwdriver PH2.

and disconnect the connector. The safety clip can be easily operated with a slotted screwdriver.

If both indicators are removed, the new cable branch is plugged into the 8-way plug.

Should the scooter come with a Piaggio alarm system be equipped, a so-called cable switch or Y-piece is required.

PV60CKTA cable switch -BGM PRO, LED daytime running light / alarm system- Vespa GTS (2003-2013)

The cable switch is simply plugged between the cable harness from the vehicle and the alarm system. The function of the alarm system is still guaranteed without restriction.

The longer end of the new turn signal cable branch is led behind the cascade to the right-hand side and there connected to the original connector and the new LED turn signal.

For the turn signal on the right side, the black multi-connector must be pushed out of the guide on the turn signal housing, otherwise the turn signal will not fit into the cutout of the frame.

On the left-hand side in the direction of travel, the black multi-connector remains in the position on the indicator housing.

Once all the plug contacts have been connected, the indicators, maintenance flap and cascade are reattached.

Finished.

Brake lever Vespa GTS white 095

New levers for the Vespa - Instructions for changing the brake lever Vespa GT / GTS

News from BGM for the Vespa GT / GTS series:

The BGM PRO brake lever for all Vespa GT, GTL, GTS models with a HengTong brake system.
The CNC manufactured lever made of high-strength aluminum can be adjusted to 6 positions.

Using the discreet adjuster located on the underside of the lever, the actual lever can be adjusted to personal requirements at a distance from the handle and is therefore always perfectly positioned for safe actuation of the brake.

The lever is designed in two parts, foldable.
If the worst comes to the worst, the outer end of the lever can evade a sudden force from outside and does not break off.

When maneuvering in confined spaces in the garage, for example, the lever can simply evade resistance or be folded up and does not hook anywhere.

Here are brief assembly instructions for the Vespa brake levers:

You will need these tools:

  • Allen key 2,5mm
  • Open-end wrench or socket wrench SW10
  • Slotted screwdriver size. 2-3
  • Slotted screwdriver size 5
  • Internal multi-point wrench TX25
  • Two hands, right and left, ideally with only one thumb on each side
  • Open-end wrench SW17 (varies depending on the version of the mirror)

Preparation

To have better access to the brake pumps, the front steering head cover is removed.
If a weatherproof glass adorns the vehicle, it must first be removed.
The rubber caps and the cover of the maintenance opening for the brake pumps hide the lock nuts for fastening the mirrors.

The screw of the cover of the maintenance opening is removed from the front with an Allen key 2,5mm.

After removing the cover towards the front / top, the lock nut of the mirror is freely accessible and can be loosened with a 17 mm open-ended spanner.

The mirror can then be screwed out to the left.
Both mirrors usually have normal, so-called right-hand threads. So turn to the right - tight; turn to the left -less.

In the lower area of the handlebar trim there are three screws, each from the right and left behind,

and are accessible in the middle from the front, below the headlight.

First all three screws are removed with a Phillips screwdriver PH2 and the securing clips are opened.
These plastic clips are not visible from the outside. The locks are accessible on the right and left via the maintenance opening of the brake system.
The clamp can be carefully unlocked with a slotted screwdriver.

Another, hidden plastic fuse is located in the middle under the handlebar cover.
The snap lock can be carefully unlocked with a narrow slotted screwdriver.

The front steering head cover can be removed more easily when the cascade has been removed.

The casakde is only secured with an internal serrated screw (TX), hidden behind the Piaggio emblem.

The emblem has a small gap on the left-hand side in the direction of travel and can be lifted from there with a narrow screwdriver.

The only screw of the cascade is hidden underneath. This is loosened and removed with a TX25 key.

The cascade is removed upwards / towards the front. The front steering head cover, which is now already loose, can be pushed upwards a little through the cascade in order to release the safety hooks on the side of the cascade.

If the cascade is removed, the front handlebar cover can be removed in the forward / upward direction.

Loosen the electrical connections to the headlight and the panel is free.

Replace Vespa brake lever

To dismantle the original brake lever, remove the lock nut under the brake lever holder with a 10 mm ring or socket wrench.

Then the bolt that supports the brake lever can be loosened with a wide flat screwdriver (min. S5.5).

Carefully pull out the bolt while holding the brake lever.

To support the lever joint, two sliding supports, in effect washers, are inserted into the lever.
When removing the lever, be careful not to lose the washers.

The sliding pads are required again for the BGM PRO brake lever.
In order to make the assembly a little easier and so that the lever joint can work noiselessly and with little wear,
the washers are glued to the lever with a little grease and thus held in position during assembly.

On the right-hand side of the handlebar, the lower throttle cable can simply be spread apart for assembly so that the lock nut is freely accessible.

After inserting the lever, screw the guide pin back in and secure it with the lock nut.

Then reconnect the headlight and fasten the handlebar trim again with the three screws, starting with the plastic clips, mount the mirror - done.

Vespa Wideframe Tuning

The Vespa Wideframe-Models are enjoying increasing popularity.

In addition to more and more replacement parts, there is also vigorous development in the area of increasing performance.
So far, existing cast iron cylinders have been rebuilt in order to wrest a little more performance from them with a lot of effort.

New Pinasco Faro Basso cylinder

Pinasco will soon be offering an aluminum cylinder 160ccm for the old Vespa engines with 3 stud bolts.

Our loyal customer Andreas Nagy, who has always been a great friend of these somewhat special Vespa models, deals very carefully with increasing the performance of the Wideframes and works closely with Pinasco in this area.

With a Prototype of the 160cc V2 cylinder he visited us on our dynamometer.

10PS and 100 km / h

Secure; In the age of a Malossi MHR, with which more than 35HP can be achieved almost playfully on a PX, the 10 horses of this Pinasco racing cylinder are not exactly breathtaking. However, you should also look at the original “performance” of the Wideframecall s to your memory! Originally with around 5HP, a maximum of 70km / h was possible on a flat stretch.

With now 10PSthat on Tugging 8 inch small rear wheel, and a suitable primary reduction, are mileage of over 100km / h possible, as can be found on an original PX200, for example.

We are curious to see the potential with which Pinasco will send the cylinder into the race.

bgm177 vespa cylinder development

bgm 177 - the new 177 - cylinder for Vespa

In this post we have already introduced you to the new cylinder. Today we give you a little insight into the development of the cylinder. From the beginning of April 2016 the cylinder finally available!

bgm 177 - the development of the Vespa cylinder

Developing a two-stroke cylinder is very exciting.
Countless parameters that have to be taken into account, thousands of test bench runs, repeatedly measured, calculated, tested, thousands of kilometers of road tests ...

Everything to get a cylinder as a finished end product that high-torque and willing to perform is, but also at the same time durable is and uses little fuel.
At the same time, it should offer the broadest possible range of applications for touring riders who simply combine it with series components, as well as for the sporty, ambitious tuner who is more concerned with performance.

Here is a little insight into the test series that were on the daily program for the BGM177.

THIS IS 177

OVERCURRENT DESIGN

We have tested a wide variety of solutions for the external shape and design of the overcurrent channels.
We created various duct geometries, control angles and cylinder combustion chambers and compared them both on the road and on the test bench.

BGM177 cylinder test

TEST MOTORS SPRINT150

For some of the tests, in addition to an original Piaggio Sprint, we also used an LML engine housing with original inlet membrane control as a starting point.
The Sprint's motor housing is representative of the very small, original rotary valve inlet of the Largeframe Engines. The rotary valve inlet of a PX125 is only slightly larger than the inlet of the Sprint engines and the control angles of the crankshafts are almost identical. In terms of the expected output, this is the “most unattractive” starting position. Nevertheless, we wanted to know what performance can be expected with these basic requirements or, better yet, which performance can be achieved.

We presented the result on a Sprint engine with the 24mm SI carburetor of the PX200 in comparison to a 12HP 200 engine.

So that you can interpret the graph below a little better, just imagine a normal PX200. Up to approx. 90km / h something like acceleration can still be felt on a standard 200. This speed corresponds to about 5500min? ¹ of the motor. From this speed, the torque of a 200 engine drops so far that it takes some time to reach 100km / h (6000min? ¹). If you now compare these speed points of the blue curve with those of the red curve on the graph, you can see that the BGM177 is still increasing torque in this area. In other words, when the 200 slowly runs out of air, the BGM177 accelerates even further.

BGM177 vs PX200

BGM177_ROTARY_vs_PX200_std

TEST MOTOR LML150 MEMBRANE

Since the 125cc engine of the Vespa Sprint with the small rotary valve is too restrictive on the power delivery from a certain power and speed level onwards, we used an LML engine housing for various tests and comparisons. The LML motor housing offers the best prerequisites due to the diaphragm inlet that is already present at the factory and the large overflow channels in the housing. As a result, for example, an inlet that is too small or differently designed overflow channels can have no or only an insignificant influence on tests within a test series.

BGM177_9 023

So on the LML housing you can easily switch between an SI carburetor and a large, adult intake manifold.

We performed the tests in this area with a pre-series cylinder with small duct cutouts in the cylinder base
and started with a piston specially made for this test.

BGM177_9 015

The aim of the game was to find out how much space the piston must allow for the overflow duct due to its design in order to ensure good filling. The piston was manufactured in such a way that the clearance around the piston pin in the area of the ÜS channels could be continuously modified by milling.
We tested each of these intermediate steps on our test bench to find out which shape or which combination works best.

Piston BGM177 V2

TEST OVERCURRENT CROSS SECTION, CYLINDER BASE

The test series below was run on an LML membrane motor with a 24 SI carburetor, BigBox Touring and pistons and ducts that have just been processed in different ways.
At this point in time, the cylinder head was still relatively highly compressed. With the cylinder head in series production, we have reduced the compression somewhat in favor of a broader performance curve.

In its original state, the test piston had the contour of an original PX piston. The piston skirt was closed on the red curve (similar to Piaggio, Polini, Grand Sport, ...)
In the blue curve, the piston has been exposed by a few millimeters in the area around the piston pin. The picture above shows such a piston.
The green curve shows the power curve with partially open overflow channels at the cylinder base and the machined piston. The released area of the channels in the cylinder base corresponds to approx. 80% of the possible channel area that the cylinder can offer.

Comparison of the BGM177 piston and channel

  • RED CURVE: Closed piston skirt
  • BLUE CURVE: Half-open piston skirt
  • GREEN CURVE: Open piston skirt

The BGM177 can therefore be equipped with a gearbox from the 200 series engines without any problems and offers significantly better performance than the large 200 series engine.
The PX125 and PX150 motors were equipped with a gearbox from around 1982 that is almost identical to that of the PX200. With these engines, the primary drive can be extended directly in order to convert the gained power into speed.
The use of a primary gear with 64 teeth would be recommended here. Depending on the desired area of application, the overall reduction can then be adjusted accordingly with the coupling pinion. The primary gear with 64 teeth offers the advantage that the bgm clutch pinions with 22, 23 and 24 teeth can be used.
This offers the possibility of changing the engine from “sporty short for the city (22/64)” to “Autobahn - everything that works (24/64)”.

In the next post we equip our LML test engine with different carburetors and intake manifolds ...

Vespa special tools for oldies

For lovers of the elderly Vespa models up to the GS series or even Wideframes called, we have a nice one Vespa special tools from bgm PRO included in our program.

BGM7913TL (29)

Main shaft bearing stuck?

Many screw connections on the older Vespa ladies are due to aging, lack of maintenance and standing around forever rotten and sometimes only to be solved with a few deep handles in the bag of tricks.

The end shield for the center mainshaft bearing is one of these cases. The face hole threaded ring made of bare steel had in many cases for decades to establish an intimate connection with the aluminum of the motor housing with the help of acidic, old oil and water.

BGM7913TL (1)

Our safe special solution

A loosening of this brazen connection sometimes seems impossible. A simple face spanner tends to slip in these cases. We have therefore “built in” the possibility of preloading in our tool.

BGM7913TL (12)

BGM7913TL (25)

The key is held under pretension on the threaded ring by the bolt that is supported at the end of the bearing lane of the main shaft. So that can safely reached the breakaway torque required to loosen the nut without the face wrench slipping off.

BGM7913TL (3)

Even with a very stiff thread, the threaded ring can be loosened without damage. Because the key in the guide has the same thread pitch as the face hole ring, the tool follows the loosening ring with the same preload. It is therefore impossible for the key to slip off.

BGM7913TL (15)

The tool offers the possibility to use both known wrench sizes of the threaded rings.

  • Hole stitch of the forehead holes 37 mm suitable for the threaded ring with 28 mm Inner diameter
  • Hole stitch of the forehead holes 43 mm suitable for the threaded ring with 35mm inner diameter

BGM7913TL

The tool is driven over the wrench sizes SW22 and SW17. The hard threaded pins are easy to distinguish over their length.
The large pin (L = 25mm) operates the threaded ring with the large inner diameter and the small threaded pin the threaded ring with the small diameter.

Both pens are also available as spare parts just in case.

BGM7913TL (23)

Depending on which threaded ring is to be loosened, the threaded pins that are not required can simply be “retracted” into the tool.

On Saturday, December 5th, the Scooter Center the Düsseldorfer created their own Open Day to roll off. With a slimmed-down program of the Open Days, things got down to business in a much more intimate setting. The weather god played along this time and the sun was already shining at 9 o'clock when it was time to leave Düsseldorf. The mild temperatures of around 10 ° could have been a bit higher.

Speaking of failure: the grill in the Scooter Center unfortunately smoked that morning and a completely new way of preparing Bavarian veal sausages in a hot water bath was used. Revolutionary! After a first refreshment, the gasoline talk was continued with a short tour of the camp. And an order process was run through theoretically.

So that this becomes a day that is not too theoretical, the test bench was then put into operation. In this way, it was possible to test the recent changes in engine concepts and put them on paper. And there were some nice engines there.

All in all, it was a super fun day, which unfortunately was over much too quickly!

dean orton lambretta scooter center

Bon voyage - Dean visits this Scooter Center with the BSG Corse Lambretta

Dean Orton, the founder of Rimini Lambretta Center visited us in Scooter Center. On his way from Rimini via the Venlo Scooter Run to the ESC race at the Harz Ring, he stopped by for a few days. Dean use the trip to the BSG Corse engine to test its suitability for everyday use and travel. In doing so, it was anything but sparing the engine.

BSG Corse Lambretta test drive

dean orton lambretta

The test drive should be as real as possible, so Dean just packed his mod stuff and also:

  • another exhaust to test
  • all sorts of tools just in case
  • Camping equipment
  • and what else mod needs

Then he chased the Lambretta through the streets. From Rimini in Italy over the Alps to Austria and over Germany to Venlo in Holland. The way home then takes him back via Germany, past us and then on to the ESC race at the Harzring.

130km / h cruising speed with reduced 50PS

He reels this distance relatively relaxed at a constant cruising speed of 130km / h. And that with sufficient reserves to be able to overtake at 150km / h. Considerable when you consider the very short gear ratio of only 4,9. With this powerful motor, other speeds can also be achieved.

The CNC manufactured 305cc cylinder is throttled to approx. 50PS via the programmable ignition. Unthrottled, the engine already produced 63PS on the dynamometer at the Rimini Lambretta Center.

ESC roller race on the Harz-Ring

A European Scooter Challenge race will take place on the Harz-Ring this weekend. Dean meets the Casa Lambretta Racing Team here. The first tests and preparations for the race will take place on Friday. The Casa Lambretta racing scooters are equipped with the new parts of the Casa Lambretta Performance parts and some bgm PRO parts. We have the Casa team with the complete bgm PRO Lambretta chassis, the bgm PRO Lambretta silent blocks and the bgm PRO Superstrong Lambretta clutch equipped.

Our first time!

Even if we've known each other for ages and that Scooter Center Just as the Rimini Lambretta Center was founded around the same time, we already met at various events across Europe, but this year we managed to visit each other for the first time.

dean orton lambretta dean orton lambretta

In April we went to the Open Day and had a great time there in this brilliant Lambretta shop with our Italian friends, great Italian food and of course many great and unique legendary Lambretta models such as the Lambretta two-cylinder prototype and the BSG 305 Lambretta.

Here is the video from the Corso, Philipp on the BSG Lambretta

On Monday So it was finally time, it was an honor for us Dean im Scooter Center to welcome. We loved every second and there were lots of stories old and new to share and it was very fun. After a few “business talks” we had dinner together and it got very late. Dean praises ours Scooter Center Generation XI Smallframe Vespa the most beautiful object in the universe - just one breath later our bgm demonstrator Lambretta than that ugliest Lambretta in the world to brand. Mhhhh…. Since we were already confronted with this opinion at the Riva del Garda Customshow 2013, there had to be some truth to it. So we had to do something about it. So we decided to make the Lambretta available to him and to adapt the optics to the perfect mechanics.

dean orton on a lambretta
Tuesday Dean tests the Lambretta on the streets of the beautiful Rhineland and came right on time for the traditional afternoon tea to discuss some new Lambretta products.

On Thursday Dean actually wanted to look at our order process. Unfortunately, we got the glorious idea to test his scooter and both exhaust systems on the test bench. The diagrams of our P4 dynamometer almost coincide with the diagrams driven in Rimini. Time flew by and after dinner Dean was already on the way to the Harz-Ring.

Many greetings to the entire Rimini Lambretta Center team and to Vittorio with his Casa Lambretta Racing Team - we keep our fingers crossed for the race

Vespa exhaust bgm BigBox Sport put to the test

Michel Holden from England, long-time customer of Scooter Center, visited us briefly on his way to the “Ferien im Sauerland” run and seized the opportunity Vespa Aupuff BigBox Sport to test once on the test bench.

Vespa PX 200 with Malossi 210 and PHBH 30 carburettors

His scooter, a German Vespa PX200, which he bought when he was stationed with the British Forces in Germany.

The engine is quite simple and consists of an "old" Malossi 210 cylinder, DellOrto carburetor PHBH 30, Mazzucchelli racing shaft with 57mm stroke and a Taffspeed MK4.

In England on a Dynojet, Michael tells us, the engine had this configuration before he left 17,8BHP (Brake Horse Power), i.e. performance measured on the rear wheel.

This is a useful reference value for our input measurement, because it allows us to assess whether the engine has lost power and how comparable the measurements are.

The old “two-decade” with the MK 4 also delivers the predicted performance well. Since the value determined on our test bench only deviates by a few tenths, one can say that the measurements on the Dynojet and here in our case are comparable in this case.

M. Holden Malossi 210 PHBH30 MK4

The 90s: and Taffspeed MK4 Vespa exhaust

The MK4 was a good one in its time (in 1996 we sold the first systems with TÜV approval in Germany) All-rounder with a useful performance curve in such a way that there is good performance before the actual use of the resonance. In general, it can be said that an engine that develops an output of at least 5000PS in the range of around 10 rpm and increases the output and torque as the speed continues to increase, is perceived as being “easy to drive” on the road. With just under 18Nm in the range just before 6000rpm, the MK4 is also a candidate on this engine, which often prompts the driver to shift down when a little more acceleration is required in fourth gear at less than 90km / h.

7320003

The modern racing exhaust: bgm PRO BigBox Sport

At the time of the MK4 the exhaust was the state of the art and no exhaust that was optically close to the original “lunch box” would have come close to such performance values.

For some time now, however, the development has been moving in the right direction efficient exhaust systems, which are optically as close as possible to the original.

The BigBox was also created from this specification:

To combine the performance of a resonance exhaust system with the look of an original exhaust system.bgm tuning

BigBox Sport vs Taffspeed MK4

Here in a direct comparison the BigBox Sport and the Taffspeed MK4.

bbs mk4

Compared to the MK4, the BigBox Sport can operate in the range from 4500rpm significantly increase in torque and power. A direct comparison on the road makes the scooter look more drivable because it is simple more torque for acceleration Available. Especially in the range from 5500 rpm, when the scooter is being driven on the expressway or motorway, the additional torque when overtaking has a positive effect.

Michael was so impressed with the BigBox Sport that we weren't even allowed to unscrew our test specimen from the test stand from his scooter and he continued on his way to the Sauerland directly with the BigBox Sport.

Vespa touring exhaust

New Vespa touring exhaust

Today we have the first Manufacturing sample the BigBox Touring for the 200 Vespa PX engines.

The normal process of a sample test includes, in addition to evaluating the appearance and fit, runs on ours Scooter Center P4 dynamometer.

As we did in an earlier one Contributions to this Vespa exhaust have already noted, the BigBox Touring is significantly more delicate in the manifold area than its big sister, the Big Box Sports.

BigBox P200_2

Without her black, heat-resistant garment the BigBox Touring looks a bit bare. But we also attach great importance to taking a close look at all the connection points without a “top layer” during a sample test.

BigBox P200_3

Test assembly on Vespa Sprint with 200 engine

One of the first tests was assembly on one Vespa VLB (Sprint). In combination with a 200 PX motor, such conversions often lead to space problems. Especially in the area of the main stand, especially the “U's” and the tabs for the stand springs. The stand feet may also collide with the manifold, depending on the routing of the exhaust system.

With the BigBox Touring, we made sure that these bottlenecks are sensibly defused. Even with vehicles with the only two-spring system on the main stand that has been introduced for the German market fits the BigBox and the stand feet are at a safe distance to the hot manifold.

BigBox P200_4

The Big Box Touring Just like its big sister, it is equipped with a solid clamp and additional holders for exhaust springs.

If you want to be on the safe side at this point, then this is ours Retaining plate with 2 exhaust springs exactly the right accessories for your BigBox.

Performance measurement Vespa exhaust

If we like the look, workmanship and fit, then it goes to them Performance measurements.

Our first "test victim" is a Cast iron Polini with 207ccm, SI24 carburetor on a standard Vespa PX200 engine.

big box touring 200

Early torque for everyday use and touring

When developing the BigBox Touring, we made sure that the possible torque is available very early and that the exhaust has a lot of pressure from the low revs.

The earlier and more homogeneously a motor delivers its torque, the more pleasant it is Everyday driving. With the BigBox Touring, you can already step in on our test engine with the good, old gray cast iron Polini 3900rpm over 18Nm Forward. Converted to fourth gear, that means a pleasant one Cruising at 50km / h with a very good potential to accelerate through to the top speed.

Longer translation possible

Depending on which engine you are using the BigBox Touring on, a longer primary reduction may be required makes perfect sense can be used to drive a little more revs at the same cruising speed. The easiest way to extend the reduction is with a clutch pinion. That bgm clutch pinion for the Cosa type clutches or a durable solution like ours bgm Superstrong clutch are good and loyal companions here. Due to the longer reduction, up to to 5km / h more top speed at the same speed is possible.

Engine swing arm Piaggio Maxi, Gilera Runner

Engine swing arm Piaggio Maxi engines Gilera Runner and Co.

Good news for performance fetishists and lovers of the Piaggio automatic two-stroke engines.

We have ours for you bgm PRO swingarm to reinforce the motor housing further developed, optimized and in a new design have it manufactured:

Swingarm BGM PRO Superstrong Piaggio 125-180 cc 2-stroke BGM7900N

BGM7900N (4)

The legendary bgm PRO motor swing arm

bgm pro swing arm

The idea for this swing arm originally came about when we were setting up our shop demonstrator. Especially for that 50PS strong twin a sensible reinforcement had to be attached to the motor housing.

Instructions for use

So that the swing arm can also find a way to your engine to protect the very rare, large Piaggio two-stroke engines; As with the previous version, a few things must be observed:

  • fits Piaggio 125-180 engines with disc brakes
  • Exhaust bracket on the engine housing needs to be machined
  • Exhaust systems must be adapted for assembly
Order the swing arm here

Easy construction

First the motor housing has to be adjusted. The easiest way to do this is to create a gap with a screw that is turned through the holder from behind of 5mm “Adjust”.

BGM7900N_2 BGM7900N_5 BGM7900N_4

To be on the safe side, you should try the swingarm assemble and measure, if these parallel to the surface runs on the Vario lid. Shortening around at least 5mm is usually always required. However, the dimension can also vary depending on the composition of the components and up to 10mm be.

BGM7900N_2

Fasten the rear wheel

That used double row self-aligning ball bearings tolerates a slight twist / misalignment of a maximum of 5 °. In order to attach the rear wheel, longer screws are included with the swing arm, which should be mounted with screw locking.

BGM7900N

Safety note

The swing arm is only designed for tough use in tuning and racing.

There are a large number of variations of the hub, rim and motor housing on the market.
We therefore ask you to use all of the parts during assembly very carefully to check for the fit and the final Assembly very carefully to execute.

With the 136cc MHR, Malossi brings a performance-optimized variant of the 136cc MKII the market.

The cylinder made of aluminum shows significant differences to the MKII.

Malossi 136 MHR in detail

  • Aluminum cylinder with coated raceway
  • Centered cylinder head with O-ring seal
  • new piston type with a piston ring
  • larger inlet
  • three-part outlet
  • changed overcurrent channels

Copy of M3115829 (2)

Dared a clear step into the modern with the MHR Malossi. Thanks to the aluminum material now used and the hard chrome coating,

the cylinder can also withstand higher thermal demands. The entry area and the volume of the overflow channels as well as the inlet area have grown significantly.

Due to the larger overcurrent channels, the motor housing must be adapted from Malossi according to the enclosed instructions.

malossi 136 mhr

For the new, large inlet, Malossi also offers a new intake manifold.

The new shape of the nozzle is intended to avoid over-greasing in the idle area.

Copy of M3115829 (18)

In the intake area, the redesigned piston opens up the cross-section for the fresh gases very early on through cutouts in the piston skirt.

Copy of M3115829 (16)

As in a very early previous version of the 136 from the 1990s, the piston of the MHR is equipped with a piston ring.

The stable rectangular ring should be installed with the lettering in the direction of the piston roof.

Copy of M3115829 (15)

Due to the increased duct cross-sections, the anachronistic CVF system is no longer required in the MHR and the piston skirt is therefore more stable.

Complete with ring, bolt and circlips, the MHR piston weighs 181 grams. This makes it relatively light despite the rather massive struts on the inside

Copy of M3115829 (17)

The cylinder head is already known from the Malossi MKII.

With the MHR, too, a 1,75mm thick O-ring ensures a perfect seal to the combustion chamber and is very neatly centered over the cylinder bore via 4 points.

Copy of M3115829 (5)

Malossi specifies a geometric compression ratio of 12,5: 1 for the MHR.

The combustion chamber is offset 0,6mm from the cylinder head sealing surface.

Copy of M3115829 (3)

In addition to the canal cross-sections, Malossi has also done something on the control angles.

Copy of M3115829 (11)

With an assumed piston clearance of 1mm, the MHR offers a sporty steering angle with a stroke of 51mm with 124 ° to 179 °.

The resulting outlet of 27,5 ° and the larger area due to the secondary outlets also appeal to performance-oriented exhaust systems.

With an outlet diameter of 28mm and a stud bolt distance of 56mm, many common, sporty exhaust systems fit.

With the press presentation, Malossi advertises the new MHR for the Vespa, depending on the exhaust system, with an output of 18-25PS.

Combined with the Franz and a 28mm or 30mm carburettor, we can also imagine a performance level of around 20 hp.

We would be happy to put your Malossi MHR to the test with us to find out.

Adjust the carburetor

Adjust the carburetor on the Vespa - that's how it works

VESPA - CARBURETOR

The Choice of carburetor size has a significant influence on the performance and characteristics of the engine. Useful carburetor sizes range in
the range from 19 mm to 35 mm.
In addition to the empirical values from other screwdrivers, there is also the possibility of a formula or a table to determine the required
Refer to the size of the carburetor. The required size of the carburetor is largely determined by the speed and the displacement. So results
the following formula:

 d = k * Vh * n

d = carburettor diameter (mm) Vh = displacement (cylinder, liter)
n = speed max.power (1 / min.) k = factor (see text)

The factor k is an empirical factor. for Scooter motors lone lies with the factor 0.7 – 0.8 quite well.

Most engine damage is not caused by mechanical problems, but by poorly tuned engines. Above all, they are critical here
all questions relating to compression and pinch edge, as well as ignition and carburetor settings. Unfortunately, the correct carburetor setup is not the case
easy to find like the correct ignition timing. In addition, the result cannot be checked as easily as with the ignition timing and the Ignition gun the case is.

We would like to help you here that you still get your carburetor well tuned. Correct jets are essential for the engine to survive.
There is no city or motorway vote, just one: the right one. Unfortunately, this can only be experienced individually for each engine. Our Spray tips table should help you to find an initial value from which you can then proceed to the one for your individual engine suitable spraying can work towards it. At first glance, carburetors may seem complicated, but with a little theory and practice the whole procedure isn't that wild anymore.

CANDLE IMAGE

One should keep in mind that with today's modern synthetic oils the spark plug pattern only provides imprecise information about the state of the combustion
gives away. Especially with very high-quality candles (Nippon Denso), which are of course still in the middle of the fresh gas purging flow, show as good as
no more deposits. As a rough indicator, however, the candle can of course be unscrewed after driving at full throttle (directly at full throttle ignition
switch off and pull the clutch!).

A grayish / snow-white candle

This picture of the candle indicates a burning that is far too hot. The engine should not be operated like this!

A black spark plug

A black sooty or oily candle indicates one fat vote of the carburetor, too high an oil content or, in general, a not optimal combustion.

SPRAYING TIPS

So that you don't have to start completely from scratch when setting up your carburetor, we have put together a small overview of well-functioning carburetor setups. You should understand it as a guideto get the engine running. Then you should make it fatter from area to area and then jet down. No guarantee!

New crankshaft bgm PRO for Vespa PX 125 and Vespa PX 200

We are working on a new version of the bgm PRO crankshafts for the PX engines. We have already installed the first samples in our engines for testing.

With the new version of our coveted bgm PRO crankshafts for Vespa, we have Maintain the tried and tested and few but distinct improvements performed.

Connection between crank pins optimized

Vespa crankshafts - bgm PRO im Scooter Center Blog.PURE SCOOTERINGblog.scooter-center.comWe paid special attention to the connection between the crank pin and the crank web. The quality of this connection determines how durable and reliable a crankshaft runs.

By redesigning both partners in the press fit, the crank pin and the crank webs, we have provided significantly more press surface and thus a secure connection.

Crankshaft bgm Vespa PX200 PX125 (5)

We have only changed the design of the crank web in the inlet area slightly.

On the Vespa PX200 engines the tried and tested fitting angle remains until the inlet closes approx. 65 ° after TDC.

Crankshaft bgm Vespa PX200 PX125 (6)

The connecting rod has also been changed. New material and changed dimensions make the highly stressed component of the Vespa engine reliable and stable.

Crankshaft bgm Vespa PX200 PX125 (3)

We have retained the previous features of the bgm PRO crankshafts.

With the wider rotary valve surface, a larger inlet area in the motor housing or, alternatively, a wider coverage of the rotary valve sealing surface can be implemented.

The shaft seal seats are designed to be easy to assemble; folding over or damaging the sensitive sealing lips is almost impossible. In addition, the shaft sealing ring seat on the generator side is manufactured in such a way that shaft sealing rings made of FPM with an upstream dust lip can be used sensibly.

We are still testing the crankshafts

Unfortunately, we cannot tell you when exactly the new version of the bgm Pro crankshaft will go on sale. We still have a few test kilometers to do and are still looking into a few changes.

But we are sure that we will be able to offer THE rotary valve crankshaft for your Vespa again very soon.

New and good at a glance

  • wide rotary valve surface
  • optimal inlet angle for rotary vane motors
  • Flow-optimized inlet area of the crank web
  • improved interference fit
  • optimized oil seal seats
  • stable connecting rod with lubrication slots
  • lower connecting rod bearing with silver cage
  • forged crank webs

Vespa Smallframe with Polini cylinder over 20HP

Today our customer John was again with his Vespa Smallframe on our Scooter Center Test bench.

Where can I find a few more horsepower in my Vespa engine? John

More power for the Vespa

During his last visit, he asked us what changes he could still make to his engine in order to find a little more power.

After we had briefly discussed what its current setup looks like, we were actually able to give some pointers through which more top performance can be obtained.

Motor setup

Basically, the engine is equipped with a Polini Evo cylinder, a 54 bgm crankshaft. The 30th Mikuni TMX carburetor is attached to an MRP suction device. The very best prerequisites to become a clear Ü20 unit.

With an additional processing of the outlet and the conversion of the Polini membrane to 2 flaps, the following result comes out:

Polini Evo 133 Vespa Smallframe on the test stand Polini Evo 133, L&S Franz, Polini Membrane, MRP

With Kytronic even better

Due to the larger outlet area, the exhaust can work much better. The small loss at 6500rpm is unfortunately due to the missing Kytronic. In the current state (red curve), a standard PK ignition system provides a ZZP of 18 ° before TDC. their service. With the Kytronic it is certainly possible to shift the red curve back to the left at 200 rpm, in the direction of the performance that starts earlier.

But all in all a nice number - have fun with it on the street!
