Shock absorber with external expansion tank

This external expansion tank of the shock absorber enables a larger compensation volume even better response, at the same time became the Adjustment range of the damping increased.
The bgm PRO SC Competition damper has a modified basic setup, which makes it very suitable for use with stiff sport springs.

The setting of rebound and compression levels also counteract the concept-typical brake nod, but also effectively counteract the rapid rebound on short bumps.

This means that the damper offers a lot of reserve even in powerful vehicles.
The wide range of damping options naturally also enables use with a standard spring, which means that comfortable driving is still possible with a soft damper adjustment.

LEVER FOR VESPA PX WITH DISC BRAKE

For vehicles with hydraulic disc brakes, the upper brake master cylinder on the handlebars is crucial for choosing the right lever / set:

  • GRIMECA year of construction 1998-2004
From 1998, with the introduction of the PX Disc models, Piaggio installed master brake cylinders from Grimeca. This can be recognized by the inscription “GRIMECA” on the brake fluid reservoir.
  • HENG TONG year 2004-
From around 2004, the company switched to Heng Tong brake pumps. These have no manufacturer identification. These pumps are also used on the current PX models.

LEVER FOR VESPA PK MODELS

The PK S and PK XL1 models (approx. 1983-1989) use brake and clutch levers made of plastic (black) ex works. These are slightly larger on the mount and therefore require an approx. 1,5 mm thick washer at the top as well as at the bottom for compensation. Then the levers can also be used here. The PK XL2 models (recognizable by the choke lever on the handlebar) can unfortunately not be equipped with these levers.

HARMONIOUS

This BGM Pro SC SPORT Coilover suspension for Vespa Wideframe convinces with its harmonious basic set-up. Intended for sporty driving on the road, the predefined specific damper setting and spring rate is an optimal balance between sportiness and suitability for everyday use.

DIREKT

With the BGM Pro SC SPORT shock absorber, the otherwise typical scooter immersion during braking, as well as the rolling movements around the longitudinal axis when accelerating strongly, is reduced. This results in an unadulterated directness. Together with significantly sportier handling, driving becomes a very safe and enjoyable affair.

APPROVED IN ROAD TRAFFIC

For pure enjoyment without regrets, the BGM Pro SC SPORT shock absorbers naturally have a KBA test mark and approval for driving enjoyment without regrets.

TECHNOLOGY

The technical features of the Vespa SPORT series shock absorbers have been inherited from their big brother, the BGM Pro SC COMPETITION shock absorber. The Vespa SPORT shock absorber has the same massive 12,5mm piston rod as the high-strength and corrosion-resistant aluminum body.
This was also hard anodized and is delivered in a noble matt black.

CONCLUSION:

Shifting claw Vespa BGM6550

New Vespa gear shift claw from bgm PRO for Vespa 4-speed gearboxes

Vespa gear claw -BGM PRO- ROUND, 4 gear, H = 50mm

Vespa gear shift claw bgm PRO precision work from high quality material

The bgm PRO Vespa shifting claw BGM6550 is made of 15CrMo5 (SCM415) chrome-molybdenum steel and the additional tempering of the high-quality material gives the flanks of the shift claw a very high resistance to wear and tear. The flanks are very tightly tolerated compared to the switching claws that are mostly available on the market. This results in accurate guidance in the grooves of the main shaft, which effectively prevents the shifting claw from locking / tilting under load.

Order a Vespa gearshift claw

We have revised the setting for the four speed levels and now offer them following advantages:

GEAR 1-2

The locking profile of the first gear has been revised so that it can be inserted more easily. It is also possible to shift to second gear much faster. This is a nice feature, especially in racing, to keep the interruption in tractive power as short as possible.

GEAR 2-4

The locking profiles of the other gears have been revised so that the gears lock in much more precisely. The unpleasant jumping out of a gear under load, which is often a problem with already slightly worn transmission gears with conventional shift claws, is largely prevented. The BGM switching spring has a supporting effect. Their spring force is precisely matched and offers ideal conditions for a gearbox that can be shifted well with full engaging gears.

Suitable for Vespa PK gearboxes

The BGM Pro Vespa shift claw is made for the so-called PK transmission type. This is driven with the round type switching claw (length of 50mm (overall height)). Round type shift claw means that the pins that snap into the gear wheel are provided with a radius at the transition to the end of the arm.

Help: Identify the gearbox

The PK type can be recognized by the marking on the gear wheels. This always starts with a 42xx (= round switching claw with 50mm). The old type is identified by the number 37xx (= angular switching claw with 51mm)

exceptions

The PK transmission version was already in the last years of construction of the

The development of a new Vespa shift dog

Racing tests

To develop the Vespa gear shift claw we did some tests. For example, we used a claw on several scooters for an entire racing season.
In some cases, the vehicles have also experienced several long-distance races and races as part of the ESC over the course of the season.

Here is the comparison between a new BGM Vespa gearshift claw from the current series (left) and a BGM gearshift claw from the test series, which was used over a year in two ESC classes and in long-distance races.

Permanently great switching behavior and low wear

The permanently good switching behavior and the low wear are of course partly due to the selection of the material and its compensation and partly to the precise guidance of the switching claw in the main shaft.

Precise manufacturing for this component is essential, but extremely complex. Some manufacturers on the market have therefore apparently decided to simply design the arms of the shift claw and thus the guides in the main shaft very generously - so the component no longer has to be manufactured so precisely in the end.

As a daunting example, we looked at a new, current Piaggio shift claw.

The surface quality of the original part is more than poor these days ...

The new bgm PRO Vespa shifting claw in comparison

On the left side again a BGM gearshift from the current series and on the right a new (!) Gearshift claw from the Piaggio bag

What is already indicated visually is revealed exactly when measuring.

Piaggio sets its own standards here ...

At 0.8mm, the backlash is clearly too big. Such a pawl inevitably leads to the gears jumping out under load.

The greater the backlash, the faster the shift dog can wear out. If the gap in the groove of the main shaft is too large, the shift pawl hits the main shaft with every load change and shifting process. The rather soft material of the simple shift claws suffers greatly from this load and wear increases further.

As a comparison, common Vespa shift claws available on the market have a backlash in the range of 0,4mm.
But here, too, there are outliers - even high-priced models from Italy stand out with around 0,7mm.

With the BGM switching claw, a meticulous tolerance of the backlash as small as possible held.

At just five hundredths, the backlash measures just as much as a human hair and the shift claw literally fits a hair's breadth perfectly into the main shaft.

Clean gear changes with the bgm PRO Vespa shift claw BGM6550

In conjunction with the Switching spring BGM PRO, crisp and precise gear changes are possible. The reinforced switch spring ensures that the switch balls lock securely into the setting.
The reinforced spring also prevents the gears from jumping out or the shift pawl from being pushed out of the engaged gear, even under load with increased gear play.

CONCLUSION:

Sporty, comfortable Vespa shock absorber with approval and an unrivaled price / performance ratio!

ADVANTAGES:

  • High light output thanks to the maximum number of windings
  • Proven excitation coil with copper plate for maximum reliability
  • Pickup with a carbon barrier layer for a clean ignition pulse
  • Neatly processed light coils
  • High quality solder joints
  • Gray and black bougier tube
  • Sufficient cable length for individual cabling
  • Can be combined with additional modules (PiFi, Kytronic, Agusto)

Compared to a conventional electronic ignition, the BGM ignition base plate has specially combined coil windings. This is the The efficiency of the alternator has been significantly improved again.

Available individually or in a set:

————————————————————————————————————————————————-
AC / DC?
The alternators are available as AC and DC versions:

  • AC = alternating current = light via alternator
  • DC = direct current = light via battery

AC
The AC variant is best for converting to a good electronic ignition. In principle, the on-board network is retained as it was designed by Innocenti, albeit best with a fresh wiring harness.

DC
The conversion to DC only makes sense with the simultaneous conversion to a sufficiently dimensioned battery (from 5Ah). Here, the entire luminous flux feeds only the battery via a so-called full wave regulator. This then supplies all consumers. The required full-wave controller is included in the corresponding AC set, please order the battery separately. The advantage lies in the perfect light without flickering, even when idling. The disadvantages are the required battery, the high charging losses in the lower speed range (controller gets very warm) and the necessary modifications to the wiring harness.

OUR TIP:

The DC ignition can also be used as an AC ignition at any time. To do this, connect the red / yellow cable to ground. The yellow cable must then be connected as a live cable to a conventional voltage regulator (e.g. BGM6690).

FOR WHICH ENGINES?
The ignition kits are available for both types of crankshafts in the Lambretta Series 3 models:

  • Small alternator cone: LI, LIS, SX, TV
  • Large alternator cone: GP / DL

Note: The BGM ignition was carefully designed and harmonizes perfectly with all common ignition components, especially with the BGM pole wheel.
So that the BGM ignition always finds optimal conditions, we include spacer plates for the pickup with version 4.0. This means that the base plate can also be combined with pole wheels whose trigger surface height (tear-off surface of the PickUp) is outside the norm (e.g. AF pole wheels) or if the tolerances of the motor housing and / or crankshaft overlap unfavorably.

New levers for the Vespa - Instructions for changing the brake lever Vespa GT / GTS

News from BGM for the Vespa GT / GTS series:

The BGM PRO brake lever for all Vespa GT, GTL, GTS models with a HengTong brake system.
The CNC manufactured lever made of high-strength aluminum can be adjusted to 6 positions.

Using the discreet adjuster located on the underside of the lever, the actual lever can be adjusted to personal requirements at a distance from the handle and is therefore always perfectly positioned for safe actuation of the brake.

The lever is designed in two parts, foldable.
If the worst comes to the worst, the outer end of the lever can evade a sudden force from outside and does not break off.

When maneuvering in confined spaces in the garage, for example, the lever can simply evade resistance or be folded up and does not hook anywhere.

Here are brief assembly instructions for the Vespa brake levers:

You will need these tools:

  • Allen key 2,5mm
  • Open-end wrench or socket wrench SW10
  • Slotted screwdriver size. 2-3
  • Slotted screwdriver size 5
  • Internal multi-point wrench TX25
  • Two hands, right and left, ideally with only one thumb on each side
  • Open-end wrench SW17 (varies depending on the version of the mirror)

Preparation

To have better access to the brake pumps, the front steering head cover is removed.
If a weatherproof glass adorns the vehicle, it must first be removed.
The rubber caps and the cover of the maintenance opening for the brake pumps hide the lock nuts for fastening the mirrors.

The screw of the cover of the maintenance opening is removed from the front with an Allen key 2,5mm.

After removing the cover towards the front / top, the lock nut of the mirror is freely accessible and can be loosened with a 17 mm open-ended spanner.

The mirror can then be screwed out to the left.
Both mirrors usually have normal, so-called right-hand threads. So turn to the right - tight; turn to the left -less.

In the lower area of the handlebar trim there are three screws, each from the right and left behind,

and are accessible in the middle from the front, below the headlight.

First all three screws are removed with a Phillips screwdriver PH2 and the securing clips are opened.
These plastic clips are not visible from the outside. The locks are accessible on the right and left via the maintenance opening of the brake system.
The clamp can be carefully unlocked with a slotted screwdriver.

Another, hidden plastic fuse is located in the middle under the handlebar cover.
The snap lock can be carefully unlocked with a narrow slotted screwdriver.

The front steering head cover can be removed more easily when the cascade has been removed.

The casakde is only secured with an internal serrated screw (TX), hidden behind the Piaggio emblem.

The emblem has a small gap on the left-hand side in the direction of travel and can be lifted from there with a narrow screwdriver.

The only screw of the cascade is hidden underneath. This is loosened and removed with a TX25 key.

The cascade is removed upwards / towards the front. The front steering head cover, which is now already loose, can be pushed upwards a little through the cascade in order to release the safety hooks on the side of the cascade.

If the cascade is removed, the front handlebar cover can be removed in the forward / upward direction.

Loosen the electrical connections to the headlight and the panel is free.

Replace Vespa brake lever

To dismantle the original brake lever, remove the lock nut under the brake lever holder with a 10 mm ring or socket wrench.

Then the bolt that supports the brake lever can be loosened with a wide flat screwdriver (min. S5.5).

Carefully pull out the bolt while holding the brake lever.

To support the lever joint, two sliding supports, in effect washers, are inserted into the lever.
When removing the lever, be careful not to lose the washers.

The sliding pads are required again for the BGM PRO brake lever.
In order to make the assembly a little easier and so that the lever joint can work noiselessly and with little wear,
the washers are glued to the lever with a little grease and thus held in position during assembly.

On the right-hand side of the handlebar, the lower throttle cable can simply be spread apart for assembly so that the lock nut is freely accessible.

After inserting the lever, screw the guide pin back in and secure it with the lock nut.

Then reconnect the headlight and fasten the handlebar trim again with the three screws, starting with the plastic clips, mount the mirror - done.

Vespa T5 big box review SLUK

bgm BigBox Vespa exhaust for T5 is test winner

Our Racing exhaust for Vespa has been tested again. And again it is the test winner with the greatest performance. In that case it became ours BigBox for the Vespa T5 from UK online scooter magazine SLUK tested. Here is a video of the test:

BGM BigBox Touring for Vespa T5

The bgm BigBox Vespa T5 is designed as a replacement for the original sensationally good exhaust system of the Vespa PX special model T5. The T5 engine designed by Morini has some peculiarities due to the adapted powerful 125cc motorcycle cylinder.

The T5 engine reacts very strongly to the exchange of the exhaust system. The BGM BigBox for the T5 is based on the standard exhaust in order to keep the torque in the lower and middle speed range at a similarly high level as the standard exhaust. Depending on the setup, it can turn out a little further.

Nice to see at our customer Nino in Portugal, Original T5 with the bgm BigBox. Seems to be fun:

Vespa T5 Original with BigBox

dyno-diagram_bgm_bigbox-bgm1012tr

Vespa T5 152cc Polini with BigBox

dyno-diagram_bgm_bigbox-polini-bgm1012tr

Conclusion

Nice to see in the diagrams: ours bgm BigBox harmonizes with the original engine as well as with Polini 152 or Malossi 172 tuning cylinders. On revised engines, the larger volume of the BigBox Touring results in a significantly better torque and power curve than with the original exhaust.

Lord of the Pistons - Meteor

On our last one Italy trip we visited Meteor in Milan. Here is our video for the Piston manufacturer our trust:

We are absolutely thrilled with how professionally Meteor deals with pistons. If you thought that the piston was just a cylindrical component and only the piston clearance, the position of the rings and pins, if necessary the window and the length had to match, you may be surprised that every piston has a has the right shape.
Meteor works in the thousandths range by adapting the piston to the shape of the cylinder liner at various positions on the piston skirt. This guarantees high performance with maximum service life.

Due to production reasons, no cylinder in a batch is always the same. This is why there are usually A and B pistons, for example, which are optimally adapted to the cylinder shape. Make sure to choose the same letter (A, B, C) when you choose a new one Replacement piston order for your cylinder.

The Piston is a cylindrical engine component that moves up and down in the cylinder of your scooter (if the cylinders are upright) or to and fro (if the cylinders are lying down).

Task of the piston

The task of the piston is to convert physical pressure into motion in a reciprocating internal combustion engine and thereby drive the machine.

Components of the piston

The piston has the following functional areas:

  • an Piston crownwho is in contact with the medium,
  • and the Piston skirt: the cylindrical component that fits into the cylinder bore with a little play -> "piston play",
  • the material moisture meter shows you the Piston pin with its bearing that connects the piston with the connecting rod.

Nowadays, pistons for engines are mainly made of cast aluminum alloys, whereas in the past they were often made of cast iron.

A characteristic feature of the pistons in Otto engines is their significantly thinner-walled design, which allows the engine to run at higher speeds due to its lower weight. In the area of the 1st piston ring groove, hard anodizing (hard anodizing) can sometimes be used to reduce wear and tear and micro-welds.

The piston crown partially carries flat pockets to accommodate the valves protruding into the combustion chamber.

The piston skirt is used to guide the piston in the cylinder barrel and is coated with a lubricating varnish on most pistons. To save weight, many high-speed four-stroke engines have the piston skirt on the sides (at the piston pin openings) offset inwards (“slipper” piston).

The piston crown

The piston crown has one or more grooves for the piston rings, the uppermost of which are the compression rings and at least one lower one serves as an oil control ring. Most pistons have two compression rings and one oil control ring. So-called 2-ring pistons with only one compression ring are also used for racing engines.

The piston skirt

In the case of two-stroke engines, the piston skirts can also have windows. In addition, most two-stroke pistons have locking pins in the piston ring grooves to prevent the piston ring joints from twisting and jamming in the control windows of the cylinder liner. In old engines up to the 1950s, a nose piston was common in 2-stroke engines to enable the gas exchange or purging process. More modern two-stroke engines, however, usually have a flat piston head, since the purging or the gas exchange takes place as reverse purging with a change of direction in the cylinder.

The piston pin

The power transmission from the piston to the connecting rod takes place via the piston pin. This is stored in a bore in the piston in the inwardly thickened part of the shirt. This bore often has grooves for circlips (“Seegerrings”) at the end in order to limit the lateral displacement of the piston pin.

Run & Race 2016, Pomposa, Italy - September 16-18.09.2016, XNUMX

That was last weekend Scooter Center drove to the Adriatic coast for the Run & Race finals of the European Scooter Challenge. Thanks to the participation of the British Scooter Sport Organization (BSSO) and several other international drivers, the spectators are offered a good spectacle on the kart track.

With the Lambretta to the Adriatic

Sounds like a vacation, but the vacation is long gone. We had 3.000 kilometers and a few days of hard work in Bella Italia ahead of us. Our bus was packed with equipment and our best bgm parts for that Run & Race Italy

The journey started on Thursday in Cologne. After 1.000 km from Lake Garda, on Friday we drove the remaining 250 km to Pomposa on the Adriatic Sea with the scooters. So on Friday it is time to leave early and the tour group splits up into a tour guide and an escort vehicle. The tour guide is done by two Race Tour Lambrettas with 28 Polini carburetors and the bgm big box:

  1. Lambretta DL 150 with 225 bgm PRO RaceTour
  2. Lambretta LI 150 1st series 195 bgm PRO RaceTour

Lambretta DL & LI

Tough test drive in the rain and pothole slalom

Test drive in Bella Italia: summer, blue skies and every now and then a stop at the car grill. That's the plan! Half an hour after the start, reality overtakes our wishful thinking. After the motorway tunnel in Verona we drive into the pouring rain. Fortunately, there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing - and we had plenty of that with us!

But nothing helps and until shortly before Pomposa we continue on the Autostrada in the rain.
Fortunately, we did not notice the violent storm directly. Several cars in guard rails and trenches, but give an impression of what must have been going on shortly before us.

Ride a scooter in the rain

Despite the capricious weather conditions and potholes, we are quite brisk. The cruising speed with the motors is around 110 km / h (GPS). The new TomTom Vio shows us the way. Both the bgm motors and the bgm chassis keep what is promised and the journey is quick and easy. The bottom line is a great tour that is a lot of fun.

Big Run & Race in Italy

As the rain stops a bit before Pomposa and the thick cloud cover tears up, we luckily do not arrive completely drenched. The welcome from Rimini Lambretta Centers Marco and the organizers of SIR is warm as usual. After the first cups of white wine, we first move into our luxurious bungalow.

Our luxury bungalow

There will be a 'menu' on both evenings. To be honest, we imagined it to be quite different in Italy ... Both evenings will be quite long for Philipp thanks to the super nighters.

The breakfast on Saturday morning is great, unfortunately we don't have much time because the stand needs to be set up and we are excited to see what awaits us. Breakfast by the sea in the best weather.

run-race-italy-2016_-18

Thanks to our routine, setting up our stand is quite easy for us - at least for those who were sober in bed before 5 a.m.
Accompanied by the incessant howling of sophisticated scooter motors, we present our bgm product range throughout the day and have many great conversations with old and new friends from:

  • Italy
  • Switzerland
  • Germany
  • Austria
  • Greece
  • England
  • Cyprus

Our photos from the weekend

RACE - The races

The exciting races take place directly across the street, where fierce battles were held down to the last meter. The Italian teams from CASA Performance and Parmakit dominate the big classes here - LINK bgm TEILE RENNTEAM. Our Austrian friend Stoffi impressively wins the standard class with the Polini engine -> LINK Shop standard class. Michi from the Stoffi team, we hang our camera around - this is what a one-class training session looks like:

RUN - the scooter meeting

Run & Race - there is also a scooter run during the race. The Italian clubs have stands on the grounds of the racetrack and you can buy parts or merchandise, marvel at scooters and talk about petrol everywhere.
The evening events take place on a camping and bungalow park where all participants were accommodated. The announced concert on Saturday is unfortunately canceled, the Open Air Nighter boiled over until the police arrive. The event is spontaneously moved inside and, if the mood is even better, the party will continue until the early hours of the morning.
After an Italian breakfast on Sunday morning, saying goodbye is difficult! But this time the 250 km return journey lies ahead of us in the most beautiful sunshine. For the last part we leave the motorway and take a scenic route through the hinterland and mountains. We reach our base camp on Lake Garda in a good mood. We still had a lot to do here:

  • Photoshoot Kerresinhio Quartet
  • Visit to the piston manufacturer Meteor in Milan
  • Photos & videos
