It's a Woman world - Marlene Parker's Filtrate Sprinter

After the orange-metal flake racer of the Scooter Centers Cologne slumbered for half an eternity in the shop's sales and showroom, it has recently been severely disturbed in its deep sleep. In addition to photo shoots for the flyer for the Sprint Race Marl and for the new Lambretta catalog, it was also exhibited at various international custom shows such as Ried and Antwerp as well as at CSR racing events on the Nürburgring.

The Arthur Francis lettering is very often used as a reference to give the baby a name. But the well-known and quite spectacular, almost dramatic story of the scooter has little to do with the name Arthur Francis.

Lambretta Concessionaires UK & Filtrates!

Instead, it is above all the names Lambretta Concessionaires UK and the then very renowned lubricant manufacturer Filtrate, on whose initiative the racer can be traced back.

In September 1965, for example, those responsible at Filtrate asked Ernie Hall whether he could convert a Lambretta for world record attempts. Together with Bob 'Beard' Webb, another tuning great, he got going shortly after this meeting. The duo is provided with a fresh Lambretta GT 200, which is subjected to radical tuning in all areas. In addition to the quite obvious optical changes, there are many radicalizations of details and quite complex engine tuning. This goes far beyond the first-mentioned measures such as increasing the pre-compression by converting to a full-cheek shaft, a whale Phillips fuel injector and a racing exhaust.

The record set by Don Noys on Lambretta in Elvington in October 1965 with 82.08 mph (131,328 km / h) was to be attacked.
After a real show of strength by the tuner duo, a press conference is announced for November 1965, at which the record breaker will be presented.

"England is looking for the super pilot"

In the run-up to the press conference, a competition for which 67 women are applying is running, according to the motto 'England is looking for the super pilot'. Including a grandmother who is convinced that she has the potential to chase sprint records. The selection criteria are enthusiasm and driving experience. The GT 200, transformed into a mini projectile, fits perfectly with the physique of the twelve young women who made it onto the shortlist. With regard to the assessment of whether the mini skirts go just as well with the photo shoot on the Racer, should be very much in the eye of the beholder. The 22-year-old taxi driver from Bristol, Marlene Parker wins the race. Her trademark should soon be the skin-tight, white leather suit.

Snow in Snetterton - chaos in Italy

The first run planned for November in Snetterton was unfortunately canceled due to snowfall, so that the scooter had to survive its baptism of fire in Italy.

Before the 39th Milan Motor Show the Monza racetrack was booked for record drives on December 2, 1965.

Despite the aerodynamically extremely favorable full fairing and despite the extremely low combat weight, Marlene's scooter does not really get going due to carburetor problems. The 'official' timekeeping is also chaotic. From a motorsport point of view, the trip is a disaster. According to Bob Wilkinson from the Lambretta Concessionaires, the test phase, which was far too short without any run away from the workshop and the high time pressure, was to blame. Marlene has her potential not only to delight in white leather, but can still prove it in Monza. With a borrowed scooter, she was able to break the Italian national record with 17.6 seconds for the standing quartermile.

If the trip from Filtrate to Italy was a sporting disaster, it was a real triumphal procession from a PR point of view. Press and camera teams surround the booth at the motor show and are blown away by Ms. Parker. The name Filtrate is known throughout Italy and Marlene is celebrated for her charm, wit and quick-wittedness in addition to her work in leather.

The inflatable elephants with which the Lambro 550 is advertised are no longer fully effective in addition to this hustle and bustle. Filtrates and the Lambretta Con. issue the following press release: "Yesterday (December 3, 1965), Marlene Parker from Bristol drove a Lambretta GT 200 to maximum speed. The quarter mile was covered at a speed of 82,296 km / h.“This achievement was recognized by the Lambretta Club Italy with a bouquet of flowers and a gold medal.

World record ¼ mile envisaged

Back in England, the rest of the winter was used to get the engine going and to further reduce the weight. In the spring of 1966 Marlene was offered a contract to attack the world record on the standing ¼ mile, the complete mile and over a kilometer in the class up to 250 cc. Unfortunately, the appointment in April does not come and the team around Ms. Parker is quiet.

On May 13, 1966, Garnett Keeler, the press officer of the Lambretta Trojan Group, issued a statement that the now "JET" racer would break the world records with a potential top speed of 125 mph.

In 1967 the scooter lost track. Several years later it appears in the Mike Karlslake collection in its current paintwork and with a few documents. After Mike's death and the subsequent auction of this unique Lambretta collection, Marlene's Roller found its way to Germany and finally to Scooter Center to Cologne (Bergheim).

The cylinders offer significant improvements with respect to power and therefore ideal for daily use.

Power is supplied even at a low rev range and the kits offer enough torque which allow you to ride even with longer ratios. The power development is very constant which means that the Race Tour engines fell like a genuine Innocenti 200 engine but with double the power.
Like for the genuine cylinder, the carburettor is positioned at the left side. The frame or the other parts require no modifications. Therefore the RaceTour cylinder is also ideal for those who want to keep the Lamnretta look unchanged but, at the same time, don't want to forgo performance.

The kit is easy to fit and comes with all the needed studs, washers, gaskets and so on.

POWER
The plug & play clutch is fitted with soft clutch springs (BGM8010W) and is hence designed to withstand a power range of approximately 20HP / 25Nm. With reinforced springs, also available separately in our online shop, the power range of the clutch increases of over 40HP.

The springs are available in the following versions:

SCOOTERS

The bgm Pro Superstrong replaces the common clutch type used in all scooters of the Lambretta LI. The clutch therefore fits Lambretta LI, LI S, SX. TV (series 2-3), DL/GP models.

All CNC machined parts of the clutch are made of 42CrMo4.

The item includes:

  • CNC rear sprocket 46 or 47 teeth
  • CNC clutch spider
  • CNC pressure plate
  • Adapters to use the pressure plate with Li / SX and dl / GP engine cover

The clutch pressure plate and spider can be used with any other aftermarket 5 and 6 plate rear sprockets. As long as these are made to the original Innocenti measurements it is a straight fit. If not made to this spec some modifications might be needed.

TIP: We recommend to use a washer (available in our online shop) to space the clutch. The washer is placed under the sprocket and is available with a thickness of 0.8-1.6 mm. The overhang of the BGM hub (clutch spider) to the BGM sprocket is in the tolerance range from 0.10mm to 0.12mm.

PERFORMANCE

La frizione, pronta per il montaggio e dotata di molle morbidi (cod.art.BGM8010W) è stata progettata per un intervallo di potenza fino a circa 20CV / 25Nm. Con le molle rinforzate, disponibili a parte nel nostro shop, l'intervallo di potenza della frizione aumenta fino a oltre 40CV. Sono disponibili i seguenti tipi di molle:

The cylinders offer significantly increased performance and thus more suitability for everyday use and driving fun.
The power is available relatively early in the rev range and the kits have enough torque to drive longer gear ratios. The power delivery is very even, so that RaceTour engines feel like an original Innocenti 200 engine but with twice the power.

PERFORMANCE
The ready-to-install clutch is designed for a power range up to approx. 8010PS / 20Nm by means of the mounted soft clutch springs (BGM25W). Reinforced springs, which are available separately, extend the performance range of the clutch to over 40 hp. The following spring types are available:

VEHICLES
The bgm Pro Superstrong replaces the conventional coupling type used in the entire Lambretta LI vehicle family. Thus suitable for Lambretta LI, LI S, SX. TV (series 2-3), DL / GP models.

All CNC machined parts of the coupling are made of 42CrMo4.

The scope of delivery includes:

  • CNC machined cover plate with shoulder to ensure sufficient air between the cover plate and the kick starter shaft

  • bgm PRO coupling socket

The clutch pressure plate and spider can also be used with all other five- and six-plate clutch pinions. As long as the pinions are within the Innocenti tolerances, this fits without reworking the parts. With such combinations, the protrusion of the coupling spider in particular should be checked.

TIP:
 Also order the shim for spacing the coupling. This is installed under the clutch pinion and is available in thicknesses of 0,8-1,6 mm. The protrusion of the BGM hub (coupling spider) to the BGM pinion is in the tolerance range of 0,10mm to 0,12mm. A sufficiently large distance is set using thrust washers of various thicknesses. If the distance is too small, the clutch does not run freely.

The Lambretta BARRACUDA story

After selling the EL-Sidney in 2014, Felix fell into a deep hole ;-). Well at least he was looking for a new challenge and comforted himself with a Lambretta frame.
Over time, the vision arose to build another vehicle with a CNC motor. With the idea of ​​further developing the ideas from the El-Sidney project and integrating new features. The Lambretta BARRACUDA should surpass the Vespa EL-SIDNEY.
So at the end of 2015, Felix gave a Lambretta motor to Topometric for 3D measurement. The tried and tested cylinder and membrane from the Vespa engine should also be used in the Lambretta. The decision to integrate an injection is new. So we can be excited and hope that our dynamometer will do the same ...

Why “BARRACUDA”?

In order to have a theme around the vehicle, an individual design was developed around the Lambretta: BARRACUDA.

Custom is the program here. Most of the parts are custom-made. FARO BASSO with aspirazione lamellare

For models Wideframe/ Faro basso è stato presentato il gruppo termico Nordkapp con la novità del pacco lamellare per il quale ora c'è anche un collettore aspirazione, questa volta non per il carburatore Polini CP ma per il carburatore Dell'Orto da 22mm che verrà offerto in futuro da Pinasco con rispettiva leva comando gas.

LAMBRETT

Today we first visited the hall 9 to have a look at the “new” Lambretta. Our friends from Rimini Lambretta Center present the new Lambretta customized for Vittorio in RLC race style as well as the new Casa performance save parts. Particularly interesting was the rear wheel rim with inner brake disc.

Pinasco

Vespa rod models with reed valve intake

The Wideframe/ rod models (low headlight) Pinasco presented the Nordkapp cylinder with its new feature: the reed valve intake. Of course there is also an intake maniforld, this time not for a Polini CP carburettor, but for a Dell'Orto 22mm carburettor which Pinasco will offer with throttle lever.

Besides the genuine engine casing with three studs and the possible reed valve intake, as already showed at the Vespa world days in Rooms, Pinasco also presented the engine casing with four studs: thanks to this feature it is possible to mount all PX 177 tuning cylinders.

In addition, Pinasco also presented the Zamak rotor for the Flytech ignition which fits the rod models (faro basso) and GS150 engines.

Vespa GS160 / SS180

The GS160 / SS180 cylinder with direct intake looked like a dual carburettor cylinder with oval / long holes for 200cc models.

Vespa Smallframe

For the Vespa Smallframe models Pinasco also presented the new Pinasco engine casings and the crankshafts which are not yet available. On display also further crankshafts with replaceable balance weights.

Vespa Largeframe

Particularly interesting was the new crankshaft for double intake.

Pinasco now offers premounted 225cc engines. 60mm stroke, 225cc, 21,5PS at 26 NM. 10-13-17-20 / 35 gear cluster with 23/64 gear ratio. Flytech ingnition 1,4kg. The item does not include: carburettor, carburettor casing, clutch cover, flywheel cover and complete brake.

The Si28 carburetors are now in VRX-R version with a small foam filter.

2017 = 25 years Scooter Center, It feels like we are at the EICMA for at least the 25th time.

EICMA = International Cycle Motorcycle and Accessories Exhibition, International exhibition for motorcycles and motorcycle accessories and therefore also the most important trade fair for Scooter novelties.

According to the motto of a title song of our Eicma video: “DON´T STOP”:
We think it's great that our old scooters continue to develop parts. With our own brand bgm we ourselves make a major contribution to this. And we cannot and do not want to shut ourselves off from the development of new vehicles / concepts.

Today our way in Hall 9 led us first to the "new" Lambretta over - our friends from the Rimini Lambretta Center had prepared a new Lambretta in RLC Race Style especially for Vittorio.

FARO BASSO goes membrane inlet:

Was presented for Wideframe / Lamp below models (faro basso) the proven Nordkap cylinder with membrane (membrane is new). Better start behavior

We have adapted the internal clearance to the assembly characteristics of the Lambretta motors.
After mounting the bearing in the motor housing and the main shaft, the bearing clearance is still large enough without the bearing running too tight.

Thanks to the high-quality sealing and sufficient tolerance of the bearing clearance, all the basic requirements for many trouble-free kilometers are met.

Our TIP for assembly: heat the engine, cool the bearings

To Assembly of the bearing the motor housing should be heated and the bearing cooled. A few hours in the freezer are enough for storage.

As soon as the bearing is mounted and has also warmed up due to the motor housing, it is time to insert the main shaft.

The inner ring of the bearing, which is now slightly warmed up, even makes it easier to install the clearly tightly fitting main shaft from Casa Lambretta.

Pay attention to the torque!

During the subsequent assembly of the end shield, the permissible torque must be observed.

Due to the design, the slender M6 studs incline outwards if the tightening torque is too high and this can damage the motor housing.

As a guide for the four stud bolts 4,7-5,2Nm .
